Road Test
NOTE:
To diagnose transmission concerns, road test must be followed exactly.
- Perform RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If transmission related DTCs are present, perform appropriate test. If transmission related DTCs are not present and transmission shifting concern is still present, go to next step.
- Ensure engine and transmission are at normal operating temperature. Ensure transmission fluid level is correct. Road test vehicle in "D" or "D5" position. Apply minimum throttle and observe speeds at which upshifts occur and torque converter clutch applies. For vehicle shift speed specifications, see appropriate table in SHIFT SPEED SPECIFICATIONS .
- Stop vehicle and shift into "D4" position (if applicable). Road test vehicle. Transmission should make all upshifts except 4-5 and torque converter clutch should apply at speeds above 27 MPH. Press accelerator to floor to Wide Open Throttle (WOT). Transmission should shift from 3rd to 2nd, or from 3rd to 1st, depending on vehicle speed, and torque converter clutch should release.
- With vehicle speed above 30 MPH, move gearshift lever from "D4" position to 1st position and release accelerator pedal. Transmission should immediately downshift to 3rd gear. When vehicle speed drops below 20 MPH, transmission should downshift into 1st gear. If transmission fails to upshift or downshift, or torque converter clutch does not apply/release as described, diagnosis symptom using appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING to diagnose malfunction.
