Strut And Spring Assembly: Disassembly
NOTE:
Semi-active suspension system shown, passive system similar.
- Mark the stud on the mounting bracket that lines up with the front shock absorber locator tab prior to disassembly of the front shock assembly.
- Using the Master Strut Service Set, compress the front coil spring until the bearing seat assembly rotates freely.
- Remove the shock absorber flange retaining nut.
- Position the oxygen sensor wrench onto the flange nut.
- Place a six-point deep well 10 mm socket onto the shock absorber piston rod.
- Remove the flange nut while holding the shock absorber piston rod from turning.
- Loosen and remove the spring compressor.
- Disassemble the front shock absorber.
- Remove the top washer.
- Remove the front shock absorber mounting bracket (18183).
- Remove the front shock absorber bearing plate.
- Remove the front coil spring.
- Remove the dust boot.
- Remove the front shock absorber jounce bumper (18A085).
- Remove the front spring insulator (5414).
WARNING:
Never attempt to disassemble the front spring and shock assembly without first compressing the front coil spring (5310). Failure to do so can cause severe injury.
WARNING:
Never remove the large center nut on the front shock absorber (18124) while there is spring pressure on the upper bearing and seat assembly. An unexpected separation of the shock absorber/spring components can occur.
CAUTION:
It is important that the flange retaining nut be turned while preventing the shock absorber piston rod from turning. Failure to do so will damage the shock absorber.
