Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2002 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

OCS, if equipped, is located under right front seat cushion and consists of a silicone gel-filled bladder, pressure sensor and electronic control unit. When the weight of an occupant or object is placed on passenger front seat, pressure is applied to the OCS bladder. The pressure is then transferred through a tube to the pressure sensor. The pressure sensor communicates with the OCS electronic control module. RCM monitors OCS electronic control module inputs and determines whether passenger-side air bag should be deactivated or not. Based on these inputs, RCM may or may not deploy passenger-side air bag in the event of a deployable crash.
