Test F: Automatic Dimming Function Inoperative
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Using NGS tester, perform Rear Electronics Module (REM) self-test. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - LS article for complete DTC list.
- Remove fuse No. 216 (5-amp) from Central Junction Box (CJB). CJB is located behind passenger's side kick panel. See Figure
. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and input side of CJB fuse No. 216. If 10 volts or more exists, go to next step. If less than 10 volts exists, repair power distribution circuit as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Install fuse No. 216. Disconnect interior rear view mirror 3-pin harness connector C911. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and interior rear view mirror harness connector C911 terminal No. 1 (Pink wire). See Fig 1
. If 10 volts or more exists, go to next step. If less than 10 volts exists, repair open in Pink wire between CJB and interior rear view mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS

- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and interior rear view mirror harness connector C911 terminal No. 2 (Black wire). See Fig 1
. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in ground circuit between interior rear view mirror and ground. Ground point is located under package tray, near passenger's side "C" pillar. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Apply parking brake. Shift transmission into Reverse. Measure voltage between ground and interior rear view mirror harness connector C911 terminal No. 3 (White/Blue wire). If less than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or more exists, go to step 8
.
- Shift transmission into Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Rear Electronics Module (REM) 22-pin harness connector C420b. REM is located in right side of trunk compartment, above battery. Measure resistance in White/Blue wire between interior rear view mirror harness connector C911 terminal No. 3 and REM harness connector C420b terminal No. 4. See Figure
and Fig 1
. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or White/Blue wire between REM and interior rear view mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
- Measure resistance between ground and REM harness connector C420b terminal No. 4 (White/Blue wire). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or more, replace REM. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in White/Blue wire between REM and interior rear view mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
- Shift transmission into Park. Measure voltage between ground and interior rear view mirror harness connector C911 terminal No. 3 (White/Blue wire). See Fig 1
. If 10 volts or more exists, go to next step. If less than 10 volts exists, replace interior rear view mirror. If auto dimming still does not operate properly, replace REM.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect REM 22-pin harness connector C420b. REM is located in right side of trunk compartment, above battery. Measure voltage between ground and REM harness connector C420b terminal No. 4 (White/Blue wire). See Figure
. If no voltage exists, replace REM. If any voltage exists, repair short to voltage in White/Blue wire between REM and interior rear view mirror. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
