Electronic Steering: Lubrication: Flushing
CAUTION:
Do NOT mix fluid types. Any mixture or unapproved fluid could lead to seal deterioration and leaks. Leaks could cause loss of fluid, which could result in loss of power steering assist.
- Remove ignition coil fuse No. 11 (10 amp) from passenger compartment fuse panel to disable the ignition. See Figure .
- Disconnect power steering return hose. See Fig 1 . Plug the fitting to the reservoir.
- Attach an extension hose between the power steering hose and an empty container. Raise front wheel off of floor.
- Fill power steering reservoir with Motorcraft MERCON(R) Multi-Purpose ATF, or equivalent fluid.

- Lower vehicle. Remove extension hose. Connect power steering return hose to reservoir.
- Fill power steering reservoir to correct level. See Fig 2 . Install ignition coil fuse No. 11.
- Start engine. Turn steering wheel from stop to stop.
- Check power steering fluid level.
- Using NGS tester or aftermarket scan tool, clear any DTC's from Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Run vehicle and check for leaks.
CAUTION:
Do not operate starter motor for more than 10 seconds at a time. Starter motor could be damaged.
CAUTION:
Do not overfill power steering reservoir.
CAUTION:
Do not hold steering wheel in the far left or right position or damage to power steering may result.
NOTE:
If power steering is noisy and accompanied by evidence of aerated fluid, it will be necessary to purge power steering system. See PURGING
