Field Open Or Short Circuit Test

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1990 Mercury Sable, 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis, 1990 Lincoln Mark VII, 1990 Lincoln Continental, and 1990 Ford Taurus. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Set ohmmeter on "x1" scale. Contact one probe to alternator FLD terminal and connect other probe to GND terminal. Spin alternator pulley.
  2. Ohmmeter should read between 2.4-100 ohms and should fluctuate while pulley is spinning. An infinite reading indicates grounded brush lead, worn or stuck brushes, or bad rotor assembly.
  3. A reading of less than 2.4 ohms indicates grounded brush assembly, grounded field terminal, or a bad rotor.
