Turbocharger - Diesel: Description

A turbocharger is used on 2.4L diesel engines to improve its efficiency and performance. The turbocharger is mounted on the right side of the engine and consists of a turbine/compressor assembly, oil supply system and wastegate. The turbine drives a compressor wheel. The compressor wheel compresses fresh air and blows it into the engine. This extra air supplied to the engine is called "boost".

The amount of boost is controlled by a wastegate and diaphragm. The diaphragm is exposed to turbocharged boost. As boost increases, the diaphragm pushes against the wastegate actuator rod. Actuator rod opens the wastegate to limit amount of boost by diverting exhaust gases away from the turbine.
