Fuel Injection System - 6-CYL Diesel: Description

The 2.4L 6-cylinder diesel is an overhead cam engine built by BMW. Engine systems include a turbocharger, Bosch diesel injection, fuel conditioner/filter, EGR module, glow plugs, and an electronic fuel injection pump.

The turbocharger is bolted directly to exhaust manifold, and consists of a turbine, center housing, compressor, plenum chamber, and wastegate w/actuator.

The distributor-type injection pump is at left front of engine. An identification tag is attached to left side of pump. See Fig 2 .

Ford diesel six cylinder injectors are of special design and cannot be interchanged with other injectors. Instrumented injectors (at 4th and 5th cyl.) are used to monitor engine operation.

Single-pole glow plugs are wired in parallel. If one becomes inoperative, others will function normally. A special fuel pick-up system provides a cleaner fuel system by reducing icing, oxidation, waxing, and bacterial growth of fuel supply.
