Injection Pump Timing

  1. With engine running at normal operating temperature, and transmission in park, open cover on diagnostic connector. Connect adapter from dynamic timing meter (Rotunda 078-00116).
  2. Observe RPM and injection timing. Correct injection timing is 3.5-6.5° BTDC at 1500 RPM. If injection timing is correct, test is complete.
  3. If injection timing is not correct, stop engine. Rotate engine until No.1 cylinder is on TDC. Remove injection pump distributor head plug bolt and sealing washer.
  4. Install adapter (D84P-9000-D) into injection pump. See Fig 1 . Mount dial indicator to adapter. Place at least .10" (.25 mm) of preload on dial indicator.

  5. Rotate crankshaft clockwise until dial indicator displays lowest value. At that point, set dial indicator to 0. Continue to rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is again at TDC (compression stroke).
  6. Record dial indicator reading. Correct indicator reading for a timing belt with less than 10,000 miles of wear is .0241-.0271" (.061-.069 mm).
  7. Correct indicator reading for a belt with more than 10,000 miles of wear is .0233-0.263" (.59-.67 mm). If timing is not to specification, install crankshaft holding tool (T84P-6400-B). Install timing adapter tool (T84P-9000-B) on injection pump. See Fig 2 .

  8. Loosen injection pump mounting bolts. See Fig 3 & Fig 4 . Rotate timing adapter tool clockwise to increase dial indicator reading, and counterclockwise to decrease reading.

  9. Tighten injection pump mounting bolts. Remove Injection pump timing adapter and flywheel holding tool. Rotate engine two complete revolutions until No.1 cylinder is on TDC. Check reading on dial indicator.
  10. If reading is correct, remove dial indicator and adapter. Install distributor head plug and washer. Tighten head bolt to 6-7 ft.lbs. (8-10 N.m.).
  11. If reading is incorrect, repeat steps 3)-10).
NOTE: If injection pump adjustment settings have been changed, EGR vacuum regulator must be adjusted.
