Steering Column Assembly (For Manual Tilt): Removal: Removal

WARNING:

Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column . Refer to PRECAUTION .

  1. PRECAUTION 

    HINT: 

    Refer to PRECAUTION

  2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    WARNING:

    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

  4. REMOVE INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 28
  5. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 29
  6. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 30
  7. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 9
  8. REMOVE NO. 2 LOWER STEERING WHEEL COVER  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 4
  9. REMOVE NO. 3 LOWER STEERING WHEEL COVER  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 3
  10. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 5
  11. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.

    2. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
    3. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
      • SST: 09950-50013 
        • 09951-05010
        • 09952-05010
        • 09953-05020
        • 09954-05011
  12. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    1. Remove the 2 screws.

    2. Disengage the 2 claws to remove the lower steering column cover.
    3. Disengage the 4 clips to separate the steering column cover upper.

    4. Disengage the claw to remove the upper steering column cover.
  13. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.
    2. Using pliers, grip the claws of the clip and remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.

  14. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT 
    1. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the No. 1 air duct.

  15. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD) 
    1. Loosen bolt (A) and remove bolt (B), then slide the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.

      NOTE:
      • Do not remove the bolt (A).
      • Do not separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering gear assembly.
    2. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the power steering gear assembly.

    3. Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering gear assembly.
    4. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.

    5. Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
  16. SEPARATE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY (for 4WD) 
    1. Remove the bolt, and then slide the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.

      NOTE:

      Do not separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering gear assembly.

    2. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering gear assembly.

    3. Separate the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering gear assembly.
  17. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the brake pedal return spring.

    2. Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.

    3. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
    4. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column assembly.

  18. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering main shaft.

    2. Remove the bolt and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
