Torque Converter And Drive Plate: Inspection

  1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the one-way clutch.
      1. Set SST so that it fits into the notch of the converter hub and the notch of the outer race of the one-way clutch.

        SST 09350-32014 (09351-32010, 09351-32020)

      2. Stand the torque converter up and turn SST.

        SST 09350-32014 (09351-32010, 09351-32020) 

        Check that it rotates smoothly when turned clockwise and locks up when turned counterclockwise.

        If necessary, clean the converter and check the one-way clutch.

        Replace the converter if the one-way clutch still does not operate as specified.

    2. Determine the condition of the torque converter clutch.
      1. Check that the following conditions are met:
        • During the stall test or when the shift lever is in N, metallic sounds are not emitted from the torque converter clutch.
        • The 1-way clutch turns in one direction and locks in the other direction.
        • The amount of powder in the ATF is not greater than the sample shown in the illustration.

        HINT:

        The sample illustration shows approximately 0.25 liters (0.26 US qts, 0.22 lmp. qts) of the ATF taken from a removed torque converter clutch.

    3. Replace the ATF in the torque converter clutch.
      1. If the ATF is discolored and/or has a foul odor, completely stir the ATF in the torque converter clutch and drain the ATF with the torque converter facing upward.

  2. INSPECT RUNOUT OF DRIVE PLATE & RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Set up a dial indicator and measure the drive plate runout.

      Maximum runout: 

      0.20 mm (0.0079 in.) 

      If the runout is not within the specification or if the ring gear is damaged, replace the drive plate.
