Automatic Transmission Assembly: Installation

  1. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using vernier calipers and a straightedge, measure dimension A between the engine and the end surface of the drive plate (#1).

    2. Aligning the matchmarks on the transmission case and torque converter, engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.

    3. Engage the splines of the stator shaft and stator while turning the torque converter clutch.
      NOTE: Turn the torque converter clutch approximately 180°.

    4. Turn the torque converter clutch and align the matchmarks on the torque converter clutch and transmission case to engage the key of the oil pump drive gear into the slot on the torque converter clutch.
      NOTE: Do not push on the torque converter when aligning the matchmarks.

    5. Using vernier calipers and a straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration and check that B is greater than A measured in step (#1).

      Standard: 

      A + 1 mm (0.04 in.) or more

  2. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER 
    1. Coat 2 new O-rings with ATF, and install them to the transmission oil cooler.
    2. Coat 2 new O-rings with ATF, and install them to the spacer.

    3. Install the transmission oil cooler and spacer to the automatic transmission assembly with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

  3. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Install the transmission control shaft to the park/ neutral position switch with the nut.

      Torque: 16 N*m (163 kgf*cm, 12 ft.*lbf)

  4. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the rear engine mounting insulator to the automatic transmission assembly with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 12 N*m (122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf)

  5. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the automatic transmission assembly to the engine with the 9 bolts.

      Torque: 71 N*m (724 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf) for bolt A and B 

      37 N*m (377 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) for bolt C 

      NOTE:
      • Make sure that the mark is as shown in the illustration.
      • Do not use excess force to pry on the transmission assembly.

  6. CONNECT WATER BYPASS HOSE 
    1. Connect the 2 water bypass hoses to the transmission oil cooler.
    2. Install the water bypass hose clamp with the bolt.

      Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

  7. CONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    1. Install the wire harness clamps to the automatic transmission assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)

    2. Connect the park/neutral start switch connector, transmission wire connector, and 2 transmission revolution sensor connectors.

      HINT:

      Push up the lever until the claw of the transmission wire connector makes a connection sound.

  8. INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Tilt up the automatic transmission.

    2. Connect the ground wire to the transmission with the bolt.

      Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf)

    3. Install the engine rear mounting member to the automatic transmission assembly with the 4 nuts.

      Torque: 13 N*m (130 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)

    4. Install the engine rear mounting member to the body with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)

  9. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily tighten the floor shift gear shifting rod with the nut.

      HINT:

      The rod is tightened to a torque specification in the "ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION" procedure.

  10. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT 
    1. Install the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts.

      Torque: 48 N*m (489 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE: First install the black colored bolt and then the remaining 5 bolts.

  11. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER 
    1. Install the flywheel housing side cover to the engine.

      NOTE: Make sure that the flywheel housing side cover is securely installed.
  12. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  13. INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  14. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the propeller shaft with center bearing (see INSTALLATION ).
  15. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
  16. ADD ENGINE COOLANT 
    1. Add engine coolant (see COOLANT ).
  17. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Add automatic transmission fluid (see AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID ).
  18. ADJUST COOLANT 
    1. Adjust coolant (see COOLANT ).
  19. CHECK FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAKS (See  COOLING SYSTEM  ) 
  20. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION (See  ADJUSTMENT  ) 
  21. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION (See  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ) 
  22. CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAKS (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  23. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER AIR GUIDE BRACKET 
    1. Install the bracket with 2 bolts.

      Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) 

  24. INSTALL NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  25. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  26. REMOVE V-BANK COVER (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  27. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER RH (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  28. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  29. INSTALL COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  30. PERFORM RESET MEMORY 
    1. Perform the RESET MEMORY procedures (A/T initialization) (see MANUAL SHIFTING TEST ).
  31. PERFORM INITIALIZATION 
    1. Perform initialization (see INITIALIZATION ).
      NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
