Starting (2GR-FSE): Starter: Disassembly

  1. REMOVE REPAIR SERVICE STARTER KIT 
    1. Remove the nut, and disconnect the lead wire from the repair service starter kit.

    2. Remove the 2 screws holding the repair service starter kit.
    3. Remove the repair service starter kit.
    4. Remove the return spring and plunger.

  2. REMOVE STARTER YOKE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 2 through bolts, and pull out the starter yoke and commutator end frame together.

    2. Remove the starter yoke from the commutator end frame.

  3. REMOVE STARTER ARMATURE PLATE 
    1. Remove the plate from the starter yoke.

  4. REMOVE STARTER COMMUTATOR END FRAME COVER 
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the cover.
  5. REMOVE STARTER ARMATURE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Hold the starter commutator end frame in a vise between aluminum plates.
      NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise.

    2. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring and plate washer.
    3. Remove the starter armature from the commutator end frame.
      NOTE: Do not drop the starter armature assembly.

  6. REMOVE PLANETARY GEAR 
    1. Remove the 3 planetary gears.

  7. REMOVE STARTER CENTER BEARING CLUTCH SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the starter center bearing clutch together with the drive lever set pin from the starter drive housing.
    2. Remove the drive lever set pin from the starter
