Introduction

This bulletin provides information on the proper automatic transaxle fluid fill and level check procedures for 2007 - 2008 model year ES 350 vehicles. Use the procedure below when checking automatic transaxle fluid level.

HINT:

For additional information including animations and video illustrations, please see the Technical Training course L076: "Lexus ATF Level Inspection".

NOTE:
  • Failure to properly adjust transaxle fluid can cause transaxle shifting issues or damage to the automatic transaxle.
  • This procedure requires an additional 200 ml of ATF WS be added through the refill hole AFTER the overflow plug has been reinstalled in step 7.

Inspection Procedure

  1. Check the ATF temperature.
    1. Turn the ignition switch ON, engine OFF.
    2. Using TIS Techstream, check the ATF temperature with the following menus: ECT / Data List / AT Oil Temp 1  .
NOTE: Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system, and lighting system are OFF.
      • If the fluid temperature is between 104 - 113°F (40 - 45°C), proceed to step  2.

Recommended ATF temperature: 104°F (40°C) or less

      • If the fluid temperature is ABOVE 113°F (45°C), see Note below.
NOTE: If the fluid temperature is 113°F (45°C) or MORE, turn the ignition switch OFF and wait until the fluid temperature drops below 104°F (40°C).
  2. Connect the Transmission Fill System.

    1. Remove the refill plug.
    2. Attach the quick disconnect transmission fill adapter to the refill hole.
    3. Confirm there is at LEAST 2 liters of ATF WS in the reservoir.
  3. Activate the fluid temperature detection mode.
    1. Using TIS Techstream, perform TC and TE1 Active Test with the following menus: ECT / Active Test / Connect TC & TE1  .

Use the arrows to turn TC and TE1 Active Test ON  .

NOTE: The TC to TE1 Active Test can also be performed using the Diagnosis Check Wire (SST P/N 09843-18040) or equivalent. Active Test ON connects terminals TC and TE1, Active Test OFF disconnects terminals TC and TE1.
    2. Depress and hold down the brake pedal.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Slowly move the shift lever from "P" to "R" to "N" to "D," then back to "P," allowing each gear to fully engage prior to moving to the next gear position.
    5. While observing the "D" shift indicator on the combination meter, move the shift lever back and forth between "N" and "D" at an interval of 1.5 seconds, for 6 seconds or more.
Fig 2: View Of Shift Lever Indicators

    6. Confirm that the "D" shift indicator comes on for 2 seconds when in the "N" position.
    7. Move the shift lever from "N" to "P".
    8. Release the brake pedal.
    9. On TIS Techstream, press the arrow button to turn TC and TE1 Active Test OFF.
NOTE: Be sure to turn terminals TC and TE1 OFF. If the terminals are ON, the fluid level CANNOT be precisely adjusted due to fluctuations in idle speed.

      HINT:

      • Turning terminals TC and TE1 OFF activates the engine idle speed control mode.
      • Even after terminals TC and TE1 are turned OFF, the fluid temperature detection mode is active until the ignition switch is turned OFF.
  4. Warm up the ATF to fluid check temperature.

With the engine idling in Park, allow the transmission to reach the fluid check temperature of 104 to 113°F (40 to 45°C).

    FLUID TEMPERATURE

BELOW FLUID CHECK TEMPERATURE FLUID CHECK TEMPERATURE ABOVE FLUID CHECK TEMPERATURE
    104°F or less (40°C or less) 104 to 113°F (40 to 45°C) 113°F or more (45°C or more)
    NOTE:
    • If the fluid temperature is within the fluid check temperature range, immediately proceed to step  5, "Check the ATF fluid level"  .
    • If the fluid temperature is 113°F (45°C) or more, turn OFF the engine and wait until the fluid temperature drops to 104°F (40°C) or less, and then perform steps 2 and 3 again from the beginning.

    HINT:

In the fluid temperature detection mode, the "D" shift indicator comes ON, goes OFF, or blinks depending on the fluid temperature.

BELOW FLUID CHECK TEMPERATURE FLUID CHECK TEMPERATURE ABOVE FLUID CHECK TEMPERATURE

  5. Check the ATF fluid level.
NOTE: The fluid temperature MUST be between 104 and 113°F (40 and 45°C) to accurately check the fluid level.
    1. Remove the overflow plug with the engine idling (A/C OFF).

      HINT:

Removing the overflow plug before reaching fluid check temperature makes it easier to confirm when fluid starts coming out at a steady rate.

    2. Check that the fluid comes out of the overflow tube.
      • If fluid does NOT come out, proceed to step  6, "Refill the transaxle"  .
      • If fluid comes out, wait until the overflow slows to a trickle and proceed to step  7, "Complete the transaxle fluid level Inspection Procedure"  .
  6. Refill the transaxle.
    1. Remove the overflow plug and gasket.
    2. Connect the transmission fill system pump and hose to the quick disconnect adapter already connected to the refill hole.
    3. Add ATF into the refill hole until ATF flows from the overflow tube.
    4. Wait until the overflow slows to a trickle and proceed to the "Complete the transaxle fluid level Inspection Procedure"  procedure in step 7.
  7. Complete the transaxle fluid level Inspection Procedure.
    1. Install the overflow plug with a NEW gasket.
    2. Add an additional  200 ml of ATF WS through the refill hole.
    3. Stop the engine.
    4. Install the refill plug with a NEW gasket.
