Steering Column ASSY: Overhaul
- If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch ON, DTCs will be recorded.
- When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
HINT:
A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt table (see STEERING COLUMN - SERVICE SPECIFICATIONS ).
- DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
- PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
- REMOVE SWITCH & VOLUME CASE (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 2
- REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.
- Using a T30 torx® socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx® screws until the groove along the screw circumference is caught on the screw case.
- Pull out the horn button from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connectors.
- Disconnect the terminal.
NOTE: When removing the horn button, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.CAUTION:- When placing the horn button down, make sure the outer surface of the horn button faces upward.
- Never disassemble the horn button.
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY
- Remove the steering wheel set nut.
- Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
- Using SST, remove the steering wheel.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER
- Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover lower.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER
- REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY NO. 1 (See REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO. 4
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSY
- Place matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
- Loosen the bolt labeled A, remove the bolt labeled B and disconnect the steering sliding yoke.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- Remove the brake pedal return spring.
- Loosen the hole cover clamp.
- Remove the 2 column set bolts, 2 column set nuts and steering column.
- REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY
- Remove the bolt labeled A and steering sliding yoke.
- REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL (See SYSTEM DIAGRAM
)
- Remove the screw and transponder key coil.
- REMOVE KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSY
- REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY NO. 2
- Place matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft and main shaft.
- Remove the bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER
- Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
- Using a 4 to 5 mm (0.16 to 0.20 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
- Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and column upper bracket.
- INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
- Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.

If necessary, replace the key cylinder (Perform steps b to d).
- Turn the ignition switch to ACC.
- Using a screwdriver, push down the stop pin of the cylinder, and pull out the key cylinder.
- Install a new key cylinder.
HINT:
Make sure the ignition switch is on ACC.
- Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.
- INSPECT IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY (SEE INSPECTION
)
HINT:
If necessary, replace the ignition switch using the procedures below.
- Remove the 2 screws and ignition protector.
- Remove the 2 screws and ignition switch.
- Install a new ignition switch with the 2 screws.
- Install the ignition protector with the 2 screws.
- INSPECT UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY (SEE INSPECTION )
- INSPECT KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID (SEE ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
)
HINT:
If necessary, replace the key unlock warning switch (with key interlock solenoid) using the procedures below.
- Remove the 2 screws and key unlock warning switch (with key interlock solenoid).
- Install a new key unlock warning switch (with key interlock solenoid) with the 2 screws.
- INSPECT TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
HINT:
If necessary, replace the transponder key coil (Proceed to step a).
If necessary, replace the transponder key amplifier (Proceed to step b).
- REMOVE TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSY
- Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts, 2 washers and tilt steering slider.
- Remove the 4 bushes and 2 plates from the tilt steering slider.
- REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT & TELESCOPIC ECU
- Remove the 2 screws and multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU.
- INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT & TELESCOPIC ECU
- Install the multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU with the 2 screws.
- INSTALL TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSY
- Install 2 new plates and 4 new bushes to the tilt steering slider as shown in Fig 11.
HINT:
Install the bushings with their cuts facing downward.
- Using a hexagon wrench, install the tilt steering slider with the 2 washers and 4 bolts.
Torque: 23 N.m (230 kgf.cm, 17 ft.lbf)
HINT:
- When replacing a tilt steering slider with new one, apply grease on the removed tilt steering slider to the shaft of the new tilt steering slider.
- Install the tilt steering slider with the bolt portion of the tilt slider faced downward.
- Do not allow grease to contact the thread part of the bolt.
This will prevent the bolt from slipping.
- Install 2 new plates and 4 new bushes to the tilt steering slider as shown in Fig 11.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER
- Install the column upper bracket with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
- Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
- INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY NO. 2
- Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and main shaft.
- Install the steering intermediate shaft to the main shaft with the bolt.
Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)
- INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSY
- INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
- Install the transponder key coil with the screw.
- INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY
- Temporarily install the steering sliding yoke with the bolt.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSY
- Install the steering column with the 2 column set bolts and 2 column set nuts.
Torque: 25 N.m (260 kgf.cm, 19 ft.lbf)
- Install the bolt to tighten the hole cover clamp.
- Install the brake pedal return spring.
- Connect the connectors.
- Install the steering column with the 2 column set bolts and 2 column set nuts.
- CONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY
- Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
- Install the bolt labeled B and tighten the bolt labeled A.
Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)
- INSTALL HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO. 4
- INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY NO. 1 (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (See REPLACEMENT )
- INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY
- Install the turn signal switch with spiral cable with the 3 screws.
- Connect the airbag connector.
- Connect the 4 connectors.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER
- Install the steering column cover lower with the 3 screws.
- INSTALL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY (See REPLACEMENT )
- CENTER SPIRAL CABLE (See REPLACEMENT )
- INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY
- Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
- Install the wheel set nut.
Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf)
- Connect the connector.
- INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY NOTE:
- Never use airbag parts removed from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
- Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the specified torque.
- If the wheel pad is dropped or there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
- When installing the wheel pad, make sure that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.
- Connect the terminal.
- Connect the connectors to the horn button.
- Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx® screws is caught on the screw case.
- Using a T30 torx® socket wrench, tighten the 2 torx® screws.
Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf)
- INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 2
- INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR (See REPLACEMENT )
- INSTALL SWITCH & VOLUME CASE (See REPLACEMENT )
- CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
- INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
- INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT (See PRECAUTION )
- PERFORM INITIALIZATION (See INITIALIZATION
) NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
