Steering Column ASSY: Overhaul

NOTE:
  • If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch ON, DTCs will be recorded.
  • When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

HINT:

A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt table (see STEERING COLUMN - SERVICE SPECIFICATIONS ).

  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
  2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  3. REMOVE SWITCH & VOLUME CASE (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  4. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 2 
  6. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY 
    NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.
    1. Using a T30 torx® socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx® screws until the groove along the screw circumference is caught on the screw case.

    2. Pull out the horn button from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connectors.

    3. Disconnect the terminal.
    NOTE: When removing the horn button, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.
    CAUTION:
    • When placing the horn button down, make sure the outer surface of the horn button faces upward.
    • Never disassemble the horn button.
  7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY 
    1. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    2. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
    3. Using SST, remove the steering wheel.

      SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)

  8. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER 
    1. Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover lower.
  10. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER 
  11. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  12. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  13. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY NO. 1 (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  14. REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO. 4 
  15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSY 
    1. Place matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and control valve shaft.

    2. Loosen the bolt labeled A, remove the bolt labeled B and disconnect the steering sliding yoke.
    3. Disconnect the connectors.
    4. Remove the brake pedal return spring.
    5. Loosen the hole cover clamp.

    6. Remove the 2 column set bolts, 2 column set nuts and steering column.
  16. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the bolt labeled A and steering sliding yoke.
  17. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL (See  SYSTEM DIAGRAM  ) 
    1. Remove the screw and transponder key coil.
  18. REMOVE KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSY 
  19. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY NO. 2 
    1. Place matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft and main shaft.
    2. Remove the bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft.

  20. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER 
    1. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
    2. Using a 4 to 5 mm (0.16 to 0.20 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
    3. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and column upper bracket.

  21. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION 
    1. Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.

      If necessary, replace the key cylinder (Perform steps  b to  d).

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ACC.
    3. Using a screwdriver, push down the stop pin of the cylinder, and pull out the key cylinder.
    4. Install a new key cylinder.

      HINT:

      Make sure the ignition switch is on ACC.

  22. INSPECT IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY (SEE  INSPECTION  ) 

    HINT:

    If necessary, replace the ignition switch using the procedures below.

    1. Remove the 2 screws and ignition protector.
    2. Remove the 2 screws and ignition switch.
    3. Install a new ignition switch with the 2 screws.
    4. Install the ignition protector with the 2 screws.
  23. INSPECT UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY (SEE  INSPECTION  ) 
  24. INSPECT KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID (SEE  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ) 

    HINT:

    If necessary, replace the key unlock warning switch (with key interlock solenoid) using the procedures below.

    1. Remove the 2 screws and key unlock warning switch (with key interlock solenoid).
    2. Install a new key unlock warning switch (with key interlock solenoid) with the 2 screws.
  25. INSPECT TRANSPONDER KEY COIL 

    HINT:

    If necessary, replace the transponder key coil (Proceed to step  a).

    If necessary, replace the transponder key amplifier (Proceed to step  b).

    1. Remove the screw and transponder key amplifier.
    2. Install a new transponder key amplifier with the screw.
  26. REMOVE TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSY 
    1. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 4 bolts, 2 washers and tilt steering slider.
    2. Remove the 4 bushes and 2 plates from the tilt steering slider.

  27. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT & TELESCOPIC ECU 
    1. Remove the 2 screws and multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU.
  28. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT & TELESCOPIC ECU 
    1. Install the multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU with the 2 screws.
  29. INSTALL TILT STEERING SLIDER SUB-ASSY 
    1. Install 2 new plates and 4 new bushes to the tilt steering slider as shown in Fig 11.

      HINT:

      Install the bushings with their cuts facing downward.

    2. Using a hexagon wrench, install the tilt steering slider with the 2 washers and 4 bolts.

      Torque: 23 N.m (230 kgf.cm, 17 ft.lbf) 

    HINT:

    • When replacing a tilt steering slider with new one, apply grease on the removed tilt steering slider to the shaft of the new tilt steering slider.
    • Install the tilt steering slider with the bolt portion of the tilt slider faced downward.
    • Do not allow grease to contact the thread part of the bolt.

      This will prevent the bolt from slipping.

  30. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER 
    1. Install the column upper bracket with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
    2. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.

  31. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY NO. 2 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and main shaft.
    2. Install the steering intermediate shaft to the main shaft with the bolt.

      Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)

  32. INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSY 
  33. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY COIL 
    1. Install the transponder key coil with the screw.
  34. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Temporarily install the steering sliding yoke with the bolt.
  35. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSY 
    1. Install the steering column with the 2 column set bolts and 2 column set nuts.

      Torque: 25 N.m (260 kgf.cm, 19 ft.lbf) 

    2. Install the bolt to tighten the hole cover clamp.
    3. Install the brake pedal return spring.
    4. Connect the connectors.

  36. CONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
    2. Install the bolt labeled B and tighten the bolt labeled A.

      Torque: 35 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)

  37. INSTALL HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO. 4 
  38. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY NO. 1 (SEE  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  39. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  40. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Install the turn signal switch with spiral cable with the 3 screws.
    2. Connect the airbag connector.
    3. Connect the 4 connectors.
  41. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER UPPER 
  42. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER 
    1. Install the steering column cover lower with the 3 screws.
  43. INSTALL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  44. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  45. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
    2. Install the wheel set nut.

      Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf) 

    3. Connect the connector.
  46. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY 
    NOTE:
    • Never use airbag parts removed from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
    • Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the specified torque.
    • If the wheel pad is dropped or there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
    • When installing the wheel pad, make sure that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.
    1. Connect the terminal.
    2. Connect the connectors to the horn button.
    3. Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx® screws is caught on the screw case.
    4. Using a T30 torx® socket wrench, tighten the 2 torx® screws.

      Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf)

  47. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 2 
  48. INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  49. INSTALL SWITCH & VOLUME CASE (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
  50. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
  51. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT 
  52. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT (See  PRECAUTION  ) 
  53. PERFORM INITIALIZATION (See  INITIALIZATION  ) 
    NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
