Section 437 (Steering Column): Overhaul
- PRECAUTION (See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS )
- DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
- PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.3
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2
- REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch being at ON, DTCs will be recorded.
- Using a torx socket wrench (Torx socket wrench (T= 30)), loosen the 2 torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.

NOTE: When removing the horn button assy, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness. - Pull out the horn button assy from the steering wheel assy.
- Using a screwdriver, release the lock part of each of the airbag connectors and disconnect the 2 airbag connectors.
- Disconnect the horn ground harness from the horn button assy.
- Using a torx socket wrench (Torx socket wrench (T= 30)), loosen the 2 torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY
- w/o Steering pad switch:
Disconnect the connector.
- Remove the steering wheel assy set nut.
- Mark matchmarks on the steering wheel assy and main shaft assy.
- Set the SST on the steering wheel assy.
- Holding the SST to the monky spanner and turn the SST, then remove the steering wheel assy.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
- w/o Steering pad switch:
- REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
- REMOVE FRONT FLOOR FOOTREST
- REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM BOARD LH
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY LOWER. See INSTRUMENT PANEL/METER
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL LOWER LH
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LWR
- Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover lower.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER UPR
- REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY
- Disconnect the 2 connectors.
- Remove the 4 screws and spiral cable sub-assy.
- REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY
- Disconnect the 3 connectors.
- Remove the 3 screws and turn signal switch assy.
- REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER SUB-ASSY NO. 1
- Remove the 4 bolts and engine under cover sub-assy No.1.
- REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSY REAR
- Remove the 4 bolts and engine under cover assy rear.
- REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE
- Mark matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke, steering intermediate shaft sub-assy No.2 and steering intermediate shaft assy.
- Remove the bolt A and bolt B from the steering sliding yoke.
- Slide the steering sliding yoke up and separate it from the steering intermediate shaft sub-assy No.2.
- Pull down the steering sliding yoke from the steering intermediate shaft assy to remove.

- REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSY NO. 2
- Mark matchmarks on the power steering gear assy and steering intermediate shaft sub-assy No.2.
- Remove the bolt C and intermediate shaft sub-assy No.2 from the power steering gear assy.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER
- Remove the heater to register duct.
- Remove the 4 clips and steering column hole cover.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSY
- Disconnect the each of the connectors from the steering column assy.
- Disconnect the wire harness from the steering column assy.
- Remove the 4 steering column set nuts.
- Pull out the steering column assy with the intermediate shaft assy.
- REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY
- Remove the bolt and separate the steering shaft thrust stopper from the steering intermediate shaft assy.
- Mark matchmarks on the steering column assy and steering intermediate shaft.
- Pull out the intermediate shaft assy and steering shaft thrust stopper from the steering column assy.

- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER (TILT & TELESCOPIC STEERING)
- Remove the inverse nut from the telescopic lever.
- Mark the matchmarks on the steering telescopic lever and telescopic lever lock bolt, telescopic lever lock bolt and steering column upper clamp.
- Remove the steering telescopic lever from the telescopic lever lock bolt.
- Using a 3 mm (0.12 in.) pin punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
- Using a 3 - 4 mm (0.12 - 0.16 in.) drill, drill in to the 2 bolts.
- Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 tapered-head bolts, steering column bracket assy upper, steering column upper clamp and lock wedge.

- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER (TILT STEERING)
- Using a 3 mm (0.12 in.) pin punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
- Using a 3 - 4 mm (0.12 - 0.16 in.) drill, drill in to the 2 bolts.
- Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 tapered-head bolts, steering column bracket assy upper and steering column upper clamp.
- REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSY
- Using SST, remove the 2 tension springs.
SST 09921-00010
- Remove the 2 bolts and steering column protector.
- Using SST remove the tension spring.
SST 09921-00010
- Remove the 2 bolts and turn signal bracket.
- Tilt & telescopic steering:
Using a screwdriver, remove the steering column No.1 ring from the steering main shaft.
- Using a hexagon wrench (6 mm), remove the 2 tilt steering bolts.
- Pull out the main shaft with the steering column tube sub-assy upper from the column tube.
- Bend the joint of the main shaft at right angles, leaving the cross ball in the No.2 main shaft sub-assy, divide the main shaft into the No.1 main shaft with the steering column tube sub-assy upper and No.2 main shaft sub-assy.
- Secure the No.1 main shaft with the steering column tube sub-assy upper and SST in a vise.

- Using SST, compress the spring of the steering column tube sub-assy upper.

SST 09950-40011 (09951-04010, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04061, 09958-0401 1)
NOTE: Do not overtighten the SST. - Using snap ring expander, remove the snap ring and No.1 main shaft.
- Remove the compression spring, bearing thrust collar and bearing from the No.1 main shaft.

- Using SST, remove the 2 tension springs.
- REMOVE STEERING ENERGY ABSORBING PIN SUB-ASSY
- Using pliers, remove the 2 energy absorbing pins.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ENERGY ABSORBING PLATE
- REMOVE STEERING ENERGY ABSORBING PLATE GUIDE
- REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER NOTE: Take care not to use excessive force to prevent the case from being damaged.
- Expand the claw hung on the upper bracket by approx. 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) using a screwdriver.
- Pull the transponder key amplifier toward the rear of the vehicle with the claw open.
- REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER & KEY SET
- Place the ignition switch lock cylinder assy at the ACC position.
- Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver and pull out the ignition switch lock cylinder assy.
- REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY
- Disconnect the un-lock warning switch assy connector from the ignition or start switch assy.
- Remove the un-lock warning switch assy toward the rear of the vehicle by pushing up the center part.
- REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY
- Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assy from the steering column bracket assy upper.
- REMOVE KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID
- Remove the 2 screws and key inter lock solenoid from the steering column bracket assy upper.
- INSTALL KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID
- Install the key inter lock solenoid to the steering column bracket assy upper with 2 screws.
- INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY
- Install the ignition or starter switch assy to the steering column bracket assy upper with 2 screws.
- INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSY
- Install the un-lock warning switch assy to the steering column bracket assy upper.
- Connect the un-lock warning switch assy connector to the ignition or starter switch assy.
- INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER & KEY SET
- Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assy is at the ACC position.
- Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assy.
- INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER NOTE: Take care not to push the amplifier up with excessive force to prevent it from being damaged.
- Align the transponder key amplifier with the installation position of the upper bracket with the amplifier inclined.
- Push up the transponder key amplifier and connect it to the upper bracket.
- INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
- Check that the steering mechanism is activated when removing the key.
- Check that the steering mechanism is deactivated when inserting the key and turning it to ACC position.
- INSTALL STEERING ENERGY ABSORBING PLATE GUIDE
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ENERGY ABSORBING PLATE
- INSTALL STEERING ENERGY ABSORBING PIN SUB-ASSY
- INSTALL STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSY
- Install the compression spring, bearing thrust collar and bearing to the No.1 main shaft.
- Temporarily install the steering column tube sub-assy upper to the No.1 main shaft.
- Secure the No.1 main shaft with the steering column tube sub-assy upper and SST in a vise.
SST 09316-6001 1 (09316-00051)
- Using SST, compress the spring of the steering column tube sub-assy upper.

Torque: 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf)
- Install the main shaft with the steering column tube sub-assy upper to the column tube.
- Tilt & telescopic steering:
Install the steering column No.1 ring to the steering main shaft.
- Using SST, install the tension spring.

- Install the turn signal bracket with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 5.7 N.m (58 kgf.cm, 50 in..lbf)
- Install the steering column protector with the 2 bolts.

Torque: 6 N.m (60 kgf.cm, 52 in..lbf)
- Using SST, install the 2 tension springs.

- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER (TILT & TELESCOPIC STEERING)
- Temporarily install the lock wedge, steering column bracket assy upper and steering column upper clamp with the 2 new tapered-head bolts.
- Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
- Make the telescopic mechanism most extended condition.
- After tightening the telescopic lever bolt, perform the loosening procedure at least 5 times to stabilize.
Torque:
Tighten: 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf)
Loosen: 0 N.m (0 kgf.cm, 0 ft.lbf)
- Fix the telescopic lever bolt.
Torque: 13 N.m (130 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf)
- Install the telescopic lever on the position where the telescopic locks.
- Fix the telescopic lever to the steering column assy with a inverse nut.
Torque: 23 N.m (240 kgf.cm, 17 ft.lbf)
- Install the inverse nut on the steering telescopic lever.

- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ASSY UPPER (TILT STEERING)
- Temporarily install the steering column bracket assy upper and steering column upper clamp with the 2 new tapered-head bolts.
- Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
- INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSY
- Align the matchmarks on the steering column assy and the steering intermediate shaft assy.
- Install the steering intermediate shaft assy and thrust stopper to the steering column assy with the bolt.
Torque: 36 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)

- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSY
- Install the steering column assy with the steering intermediate shaft assy with the 4 steering column set nuts.
Torque: 26 N.m (270 kgf.cm, 20 ft.lbf)
- Connect the wire harness to the steering column assy.
- Connect each of the connectors to the steering column assy.
- Install the steering column assy with the steering intermediate shaft assy with the 4 steering column set nuts.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER
- Install the steering column hole cover with the 4 clips.
- Install the heater to register duct to the heater unit.

- INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT SUB-ASSY NO.2
- Align the matchmarks on the power steering gear and steering intermediate shaft sub-assy No.2.
- Install the steering intermediate shaft sub-assy No.2 to the steering gear box with the bolt C.

Torque:
Bolt C: 36 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)
- INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE
- Align the matchmarks on the steering column and steering sliding yoke.
- Install the steering sliding yoke to the steering column assy and slide it upward.
- Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft sub-assy No.2 and steering sliding yoke.
- Install the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft sub-assy No.2 with the bolt A and bolt B.
Torque:
Bolt A, B: 36 N.m (360 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf)
- INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSY REAR
- Install the engine under cover assy rear with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 29 N.m (300 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf)
- Install the engine under cover assy rear with the 4 bolts.
- INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER SUB-ASSY NO.1
- Install the engine under cover sub-assy No.1 with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 29 N.m (300 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf)
- Install the engine under cover sub-assy No.1 with the 4 bolts.
- INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY
- Install the turn signal switch assy with the 3 screws.
- Connect the 3 connectors to the turn signal switch assy.

- INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY
- Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
- Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn.
- Then rotate the spiral cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the mark.NOTE:
The spiral cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either left or right of the center.
- Install the spiral cable with the 4 screws.
- Connect the 2 connectors to the spiral cable sub-assy.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER UPR
- Install the steering column cover upper to the steering column assy.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER LWR
- Install the steering column cover lower to the steering column assy.
- Install the 3 screws to the steering column cover upper and lower.
- INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL LOWER LH
- INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY LOWER . See INSTRUMENT PANEL/METER
- INSTALL COWL SIDE TRIM BOARD LH
- INSTALL FRONT FLOOR FOOTREST
- INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
- INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY
- Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assy.
- Install the steering set nut.
Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf)
- w/o Steering pad switch:
Connect the connector.
- INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY NOTE:
- Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
- Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
- If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
- When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.
- Connect the horn ground harness to the horn button assy.
- Connect the 2 airbag connectors.
- Install the horn button assy after confirming that the circumference groove of torx screw is caught on the screw case.
- Using a torx socket wrench (Torx socket wrench (T=30)), torque the 2 screws.
Torque: 8.8 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 78 in..lbf)
- INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2
- INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.3
- PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
- INSTALL BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
- INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT . See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
