Removal & Installation: CAMRY: Reassembly
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Toyota Camry. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Using Rear Axle Shaft Bearing Remover (SST 09527-30010 and 09527-10011) or equivalent and steel plate, install new axle bearing. See Fig 1. Using snap ring expander, install new right axle shaft hole snap ring. Using Lower Control Shaft Bearing Replacer (SST 09726-40010) or equivalent and press, install new axle shaft dust cover. See Fig 2.
- Using Rear Axle Bearing Remover (SST 09527-10011) or equivalent and press, install new dust cover on right axle shaft. Distance from tip of center axle shaft to right axle shaft dust cover should meet specifications. See RIGHT AXLE SHAFT DUST COVER SPECIFICATIONS table. See Fig 3.RIGHT AXLE SHAFT DUST COVER SPECIFICATIONS
Application Length - In. (mm) 2.4L (2AZ-FE) 3.58-3.62 (91.0-92.0) 3.0L (1MZ-FE) & 3.3L (3MZ-FE) 4.28-4.32 (110.0-111.0) - Using Rear Axle Bearing Remover and press, install new left axle shaft dust cover. See Fig 4. Install new left axle shaft hole snap ring. On models not equipped with ABS, use Direct Clutch Wrench (SST 09387-00020) or equivalent and press, to install new left front wheel bearing dust deflector. See Fig 5. Distance from tip of outboard drive joint shaft to wheel bearing dust deflector should be 0.531-0.543 in. (13.5-13.8 mm). On all models, mount axle shaft in soft vise and temporarily install new outboard joint boot with 2 clamps on axle shaft. Before installing boot, wrap spline of axle shaft with vinyl tape to prevent boots from being damaged.
- Pack outboard joint shaft and boot with grease from boot kit. For grease specifications, see BOOT GREASE SPECIFICATIONS table. Install 2 left axle outboard joint boot clamps onto boot. Place Rear Axle Shaft Puller (SST 09521-24010) or equivalent onto outboard joint large boot clamp. Tighten tool so that large clamp is pinched. DO NOT overtighten. See Fig 6.
- Using Wire Gauge (SST 09240-00020) or equivalent, adjust clearance of large clamp. Clearance should be about 0.118-0.157 in. (3.0-4.0 mm). If measured distance is greater than specified value, retighten clamp. See Fig 7.
- Using puller, install small boot clamp to outboard joint. After clamp is tightened, adjust clearance in clamp. Clearance should be about 0.059-0.098 in. (1.5-2.5 mm). If measured clearance is greater than specified value, retighten clamp. See Fig 7.
- On automatic transaxle vehicles, install left axle shaft damper. Distance should be set to about 8.071-8.229 inches (205.0-209.0 mm). Ensure that left axle shaft damper is on shaft groove. See Fig 8. Place Rear Axle Shaft Puller (SST 09521-24010) or equivalent on left axle shaft damper clamp. Tighten tool so that damper clamp is pinched. DO NOT overtighten. See Fig 6.
- Using wire gauge adjust clearance of left axle damper clamp. Clearance should be about 0.0020-0.047 in. (0.5-1.2 mm). If measured clearance is greater than specified value, retighten clamp. See Fig 7.
- On all 2.4L models, install right axle shaft damper. Distance should be set to about 8.071-8.229 inches (205.0-209.0 mm). Ensure that right axle shaft damper is on shaft groove. See Fig 8. Place Rear Axle Shaft Puller on to right axle shaft damper clamp. Tighten tool so that damper clamp is pinched. DO NOT overtighten. See Fig 6. Using wire gauge, adjust clearance of right axle damper clamp. Clearance should be about 0.020-0.047 in. (0.5-1.2 mm). If measured clearance is greater than specified value, retighten clamp. See Fig 7.
- On all models, temporarily install new inboard joint boot with 2 clamps on axle shaft. Place beveled side of tripod joint axial spline toward left axle outboard joint shaft and align marks placed before removal. Using brass bar and hammer, tap in tripod to left outboard shaft. DO NOT tap roller. Ensure tripod joint is installed in correct direction. Using snap ring expander, install new left inner axle shaft snap ring.
- Pack left inboard joint shaft and inboard joint boot with grease from boot kit. For grease specifications, see BOOT GREASE SPECIFICATIONS table. Align marks made prior to removal and install axle inboard joint with outboard joint shaft. Install inboard joint boot to inboard joint assembly.
- Install left axle inboard joint boot clamp using following steps: If clamps are omega type clamp, go to next step. If clamp is by claw engagement, use pliers to install clamp and pinch claws together to tighten. go to step 14.
- Place drive shaft in soft jaw vise. Install 2 new inboard joint boot clamps to boot. Place axle shaft puller on to boot clamp and tighten tool so that clamp is pinched. DO NOT overtighten. See Fig 6. Using a wire gauge, ensure that clearance between pinched clamp is 0.075 in. (1.9 mm) or less. If clearance measured in clamp is greater than specified value, retighten clamp. See Fig 7. Go to next step.
- Install second left axle inboard joint boot clamp by placing axle shaft in soft jaw vise. Place 2 new inboard joint boot clamps on boot. Place Rear Axle Shaft Puller (SST (09521-24010) or equivalent on left axle inboard joint boot clamp. Tighten tool so that boot clamp is pinched. DO NOT overtighten. See Fig 6.
- Using wire gauge to adjust clearance of left inboard joint boot clamp. Clearance should be about 0.075 in. (1.9 mm) or less. If clearance is greater that specified value, retighten clamp. See Fig 7.
- Inspect axle shaft. See INSPECTION . Also, ensure that both boots are on shaft groove and boots are not stretched or contracted with axle shafts are at standard length. See AXLE SHAFT LENGTH SPECIFICATIONS table.
