Description & Operation
The Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) works in conjunction with the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Traction Control (TRAC), Brake Assist (BA), sensors, actuators and the ABS/BA/TRAC/VSC control unit assembly to help maintain vehicle traction in skids caused by adverse driving conditions. ABS is also operational even in low range 4-wheel drive while center differential is locked. The active traction control function helps distribute drive force that would have been lost due to slipping or spinning tire. See Fig 1.
The ABS, VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, BRAKE, SLIP and ACTIVE TRAC indicator and warning lights are located on bottom of instrument panel. These lights illuminate for 3 seconds as a bulb test when ignition is first turned on. A VSC buzzer will also sound when brake pedal is depressed repeatedly while accumulator pressure is abnormally low.
Under normal driving conditions, the ABS functions as a standard brake system. With detection of wheel lock-up, short pedal pulsations occurring in rapid succession will be felt in brake pedal. Pedal pulsation will continue until there is no longer a need for ABS function.
