Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge

  1. Disconnect temperature gauge sending unit harness connector. Turn ignition on and observe gauge needle. Gauge needle should move to COOL position. Connect sending unit harness connector terminal to ground through a 3.4-watt test bulb and observe bulb and gauge needle. Test bulb should illuminate and gauge needle should move to HOT position. If gauge functions as specified, replace sending unit and retest. If gauge does not function as specified, go to next step.
  2. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove 3 screws from back of instrument cluster. See Fig 1. Measure resistance between specified terminals on back of instrument cluster. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE RESISTANCE  table. Replace gauge if resistance is not as specified.
