Disassembly (Power Tilt & Telescoping)

  1. Remove ignition key cylinder illumination. Place matching reference marks on sliding yoke and main shaft. Remove sliding yoke. Remove lower dust cover. Remove seal from dust cover. Remove telescopic position sensor plate. See Fig 1.

  2. Remove tilt and telescopic position sensors. Remove turn signal bracket. Remove No. 1 and 2 protectors. Remove connector bracket. Using center punch, mark center of 2 upper bracket tapered head bolts. Using a .16-.20" (4-5 mm) drill, drill bolts. Using screw extractor, remove upper column bracket attaching bolts. Remove bracket.
  3. Remove nuts, spacers, springs, bushings and bond cable from support stopper bolts. Remove 2 No. 2 tilt steering shafts. See Fig 2. Remove tilt steering gear assembly with motor. See Fig 1.

  4. Remove 2 bushings and support stopper bolts. Remove upper tube tilt steering shafts. See Fig 3. Remove snap ring from main shaft. Remove upper tube and main shaft from lower tube. Remove tilt steering housing support.

  5. Secure column upper tube in vise. Using appropriate clamp, compress compression spring. Remove snap ring. See Fig 4. Remove main shaft from upper tube. Remove spring, thrust collar and bearing.
  6. To replace key cylinder, turn ignition to ACC position. Push down stop pin and pull out key cylinder. Install new cylinder. Ensure ignition switch is in ACC position.
