Component Testing: Solenoids

NOTE: Following solenoid testing is for non-variable orifice type solenoids. For varible orifice solenoid testing, see appropriate code test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTING .
  1. Access ECT ECU. See Figure and Figure. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect electrical connector from ECT ECU connector.
  2. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between S1, S2, S or S4 terminal and body ground. Replace solenoid if resistance is not 11-16 ohms.
  3. To check solenoid operation, apply battery voltage to appropriate terminal of ECT ECU connector and ground. Ensure operating sound can be heard when battery voltage is connected. Replace solenoid if operating sound cannot be heard.
  4. To check solenoid seals, connect battery voltage to appropriate solenoid. Apply 71 psi (5 kg/cm2 ) to solenoid with battery voltage connected. See Fig 1 and Fig 2.
  5. On S1, S2 or S4 solenoids, with battery voltage applied, air should pass through solenoid. Disconnect battery and ensure air does not pass through solenoid. Replace solenoid if defective.
  6. On S (lock-up) solenoid, with battery voltage applied, air should not pass through solenoid. Disconnect battery and ensure air passes through solenoid. Replace solenoid if defective.
