Fuel Gauge Sending Unit Test

  1. Remove fuel gauge sending unit. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect 3 1.5-volt dry cell batteries together in series. See Figure. Connect negative lead from dry cell assembly to terminal No. 4 of fuel gauge sending unit connector. Connect positive lead of dry cell assembly, through a 3.4-watt test bulb, to terminal No. 3.
  2. Connect negative lead of a voltmeter to terminal No. 4 and positive lead to terminal No. 3. Measure voltage as fuel gauge sending unit float is lowered from top to bottom position. Voltage should rise. If voltage does not change as specified, check fuel gauge sending unit resistance.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals No. 3 and 4 of fuel gauge sending unit connector. With float 1.4" (35 mm) from full upward position, resistance should be approximately 3 ohms. Position float 5.5" (141 mm) from full upward position. Resistance reading should be approximately 110 ohms. If resistance readings are not as specified, replace fuel gauge sending unit.
