SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSES ACTION
GEARBOX FAULT warning message
  • Engine system fault
  • Automatic transmission system fault
NOTE: Record the freeze frame data; this may be required for warranty purposes.
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the engine control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the transmission control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
No communication with the transmission control module
NOTE: Circuit reference - BAT+/IGNITION/GND/HS CAN H/HS CAN L -
  • Transmission control module power or ground circuit open circuit, high resistance
  • High speed CAN bus circuit short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Transmission control module internal failure
  • Refer to the appropriate system wiring diagrams and check the transmission control module power and ground circuits for open circuit, high resistance
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, perform a CAN network integrity test. Refer to the appropriate system wiring diagrams and check the high speed CAN bus circuit for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, clear the DTCs and retest. If the fault persists, install a new transmission control module. Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, perform routine - Gear Selector Sensor Calibration
Automatic transmission fluid leaking
  • Halfshaft seal failure
  • Power transfer unit seal failure
  • Input shaft seal failure
  • Selector shaft seal failure
  • Fluid pad gasket failure
  • Transmission oil cooler
  • Transmission oil cooler hoses
  • Install a new halfshaft seal
  • Install a new power transfer unit seal
  • Install a new input shaft seal
  • Install a new selector shaft seal
  • Remove and install the fluid pan
  • Install a new transmission oil cooler
  • Install a new transmission oil cooler hose
No drive or intermittent drive when 'Drive' selected
  • Gearshift mechanism cable maladjusted
  • Insufficient automatic transmission fluid
  • Refer to the relevant service information and check the gearshift mechanism cable adjustment. Adjust as necessary
  • Refer to the relevant service information and check the automatic transmission fluid level. Rectify fluid leaks and add automatic transmission fluid as necessary
Gearshift mechanism LEDs not illuminating - All LEDs (gears engaging normally)
  • Gearshift mechanism power or ground circuit open circuit, high resistance
  • Gearshift mechanism LIN bus circuit short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Gearshift mechanism internal failure
  • Refer to the appropriate system wiring diagrams and check the gearshift mechanism power and ground circuits for open circuit, high resistance
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the transmission control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index. Refer to the appropriate system wiring diagrams and check the gearshift mechanism LIN bus circuit for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Install a new gearshift mechanism
Gearshift mechanism LED(s) not illuminating - Not all LEDs (gears engaging normally)
  • Gearshift mechanism internal failure
  • Install a new gearshift mechanism
Excessive time lag when selecting 'Drive' and/or 'Reverse'
  • Automatic transmission fluid level low
  • Automatic transmission internal failure
  • Refer to the relevant service information and check the automatic transmission fluid level. Rectify fluid leaks and add automatic transmission fluid as necessary
  • GO to Pinpoint Test G .
Kick-down inoperative
  • Accelerator pedal movement restricted
  • Engine system fault
  • Transmission control module internal failure
  • Check the installation of the floor mats
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the engine control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index. Refer to the relevant service information and check the engine, the fuel system, the intake system and the exhaust system
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the transmission control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
Unable to move the gearshift mechanism
  • Brake pedal switch fault
  • Shiftlock mechanical failure
  • Shiftlock circuit short circuit to ground, open circuit, high resistance
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the central junction box for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
  • Check the mechanical operation of the shift lock - Remove the gearshift mechanism cover, raise the shift lock lever and attempt to move the gearshift mechanism
  • Refer to the appropriate system wiring diagrams and check the shiftlock circuit for short circuit to ground, open circuit, high resistance
Torque converter lock-up clutch inoperative
  • Pressure control solenoid circuit short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance
  • Automatic transmission fluid level low
  • Torque converter internal failure
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the transmission control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index. If no related DTCs are set, perform automatic transmission sensor/actuator circuit resistance tests
  • Refer to the relevant service information and check the automatic transmission fluid level. Rectify fluid leaks and add automatic transmission fluid as necessary
  • Install a new torque converter
Engine stalls when 'Drive' or 'Reverse' selected
  • Engine system fault
  • Pressure control solenoid circuit short circuit to ground, short circuit to power
  • Torque converter internal failure
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the engine control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the transmission control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index. If no related DTCs are set, perform automatic transmission sensor/actuator circuit resistance tests
  • Install a new torque converter
Harsh gear shifts
  • Automatic transmission fault
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the transmission control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index. If no related DTCs are set, contact Dealer Technical Support
Knocking or judder/vibration after selecting 'Drive' or 'Reverse'
  • Engine system fault
  • Driveline fault
  • Suspension fault
  • Automatic transmission internal failure
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the engine control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
  • Check the integrity of the driveline system
  • Check the integrity of the suspension system
  • GO to Pinpoint Test G .
Surging in 'Drive' or 'Reverse' at low engine speed
  • Engine system fault
  • Automatic transmission fluid level low
  • Automatic transmission internal failure
  • Using the manufacturer approved diagnostic system, check the engine control module for related DTCs and refer to the relevant DTC index
  • Refer to the relevant service information and check the automatic transmission fluid level. Rectify fluid leaks and add automatic transmission fluid as necessary
  • GO to Pinpoint Test G .
Vehicle creeps forward or rearward when 'Neutral' selected
  • Gearshift mechanism cable maladjusted
  • Refer to the relevant service information and check the gearshift mechanism cable adjustment. Adjust as necessary
Vehicle does not creep forward/rearward when 'Drive'/'Reverse' selected (on a level surface with brakes released)
  • Insufficient automatic transmission fluid
  • Refer to the relevant service information and check the automatic transmission fluid level. Rectify fluid leaks and add automatic transmission fluid as necessary
Vehicle moves when 'Park' selected
  • Gearshift mechanism cable maladjusted
  • Automatic transmission internal failure
  • Refer to the relevant service information and check the gearshift mechanism cable adjustment. Adjust as necessary
  • Set the gearshift mechanism to 'Park' and check the instrument cluster to confirm that 'Park' is engaged. If 'Park' engagement is confirmed, contact Dealer Technical Support
Automatic transmission fluid contaminated with water (cloudy/emulsified)
  • Automatic transmission breather damaged
  • Transmission oil cooler internal failure
NOTE: Retain a sample of the contaminated automatic transmission fluid; this may be required for warranty purposes.
