CONDITION SUMMARY

Situation:  A customer may report that the horn sounds distorted when operated. This version has been issued for the addition of Evoque to the Service Instruction, Warranty and Parts sections. 

Cause:  Faulty diode within the horn. Suggested Customer Concern Code - JB1. 

Action:  Should a customer express concern, follow the Service Instruction outlined below.

SERVICE INSTRUCTION

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
NOTE: Some variation in the illustrations may occur, but the essential information is always correct.

Range Rover Sport and Discovery 4/LR4 Only 

  1. Remove the radiator grille (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 501-08).
  2. Note the difference between the horn assemblies.
    • Old design horn assembly (1).
    • New design horn assembly (with or without wiring harness) (2).

  3. Remove and discard the horn assembly.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector (1).
    • If installed, release the electrical connector (2).
    • Remove the retaining bolts (3).

    NOTE: If the new horn supplied does not have a wiring harness attached, go to Step 5.
  4. Install the new horn assembly.
    • Connect the electrical connector (1).
    • If installed, secure the electrical connector (2).
    • Install the Torx bolts (3).
    • Torque: 7 Nm
    • Go to step  8.

    NOTE: Both of the wires in the wiring harness are coloured black, make sure that they are clearly marked to prevent incorrect installation.
  5. Locate the electrical connecter (1).
    • Using a suitable marker, clearly mark one of the wiring harness wires and the corresponding cavity in the electrical connector on the body wiring harness.

    NOTE: Both of the wires in the wiring harness are coloured black, make sure that they are clearly marked to prevent incorrect installation.
  6. Using a suitable terminal release tool from the harness repair kit, swap the wiring harness wires in the electrical connector from one cavity into the other cavity.
    • Release the anti back-out device.
    • Using the special tool, release both wiring harness wires.
    • Install both wiring harness wires in to the other cavity.
    • Secure the anti back-out device.

  7. Install electrical connecter to horn.
    • Apply the horn to check the horn is operating correctly.
  8. Install the radiator grille (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 501-08).

    Range Rover Only 

  9. Remove the front bumper cover (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 501-19).
    NOTE: Note the installed position of the component to aid installation.
    NOTE: The high tone horn is located in front of the right hand lower side of the radiator.
  10. Remove and discard the horn assembly.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Release the retaining clip.
    • Remove the nut.

    NOTE: This low tone horn is located behind the right side of the front bumper.
  11. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the low tone horn.
    • Disconnect the electrical connectors
    • Release the fir tree clip.

  12. Remove and discard the horn assembly.
    • Remove the retaining bolt.

  13. Remove and discard wiring harness.
    • Release the 2 retaining clips.

    NOTE: Both of the wiring harness wires are coloured black, make sure that they are clearly marked to prevent incorrect installation.
  14. Using a suitable marker, clearly mark one of the wiring harness wires and the corresponding cavity in the electrical connector on the body harness.

  15. Using a suitable terminal release tool from the harness repair kit, swap the wiring harness wires in the electrical connector from one cavity into the other cavity.
    • Release the anti back-out device.
    • Using the special tool, release both wiring harness wires.
    • Install both wiring harness wires in to the other cavity.
    • Secure the anti back-out device.

    NOTE: Test the horn for correct operation before installing the front bumper cover.
  16. To install, reverse the Steps  7 to  10 with the new horns and new wiring harness.
    • Install the horn mounting bracket retaining nut and bolt.
    • Torque: 7 Nm
  17. Install the front bumper cover (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 501-19).

    Range Rover Evoque Only 

  18. Remove the horn assembly (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 413-06).
    NOTE: Both of the wiring harness wires are coloured black, make sure that they are clearly marked to prevent incorrect installation.
  19. Using a suitable terminal release tool from the harness repair kit, swap the wires in the electrical connector from one cavity into the other cavity.
    • Release the anti back-out device.
    • Using the special tool, release both wiring harness wires.
    • Install both wiring harness wires in to the other cavity.
    • Secure the anti back-out device.

  20. Install the horn assembly (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 413-06).
