Steering Column Lower Shaft: Installation

  1. Clean the component mating faces.
  2. CAUTION: Make sure that the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  3. Install the steering column lower shaft.
    • Connect the steering column lower shaft to the steering gear.
    • Connect the steering column intermediate shaft to the lower shaft.
  4. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  5. CAUTION: Make sure that a new bolt is installed.
  6. Install the steering column lower shaft upper bolt.
    • Install a new bolt and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb.ft).
  7. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
  8. CAUTION: Do not turn the steering wheel with the steering column lower shaft disconnected as damage to the clockspring and steering wheel switches may occur.
    CAUTION: Make sure that the steering is correctly positioned using the road wheels. Do not turn the steering wheel. Failure to follow this instruction my result in damage to the vehicle.
  9. Turn the steering until access can be gained to the steering column lower shaft bolt.
  10. Install the steering column lower shaft to steering gear bolt.
    • Install a new bolt and tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb.ft).
  11. Install the fender splash shield lower trim.
    • Install the 4 clips.
  12. Install the upper suspension arm heat shield.
    • Install the 3 nuts.
  13. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
