Section 3 (Disc Brakes): Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Land Rover Range Rover, 2000 Land Rover Discovery, 1999 Land Rover Range Rover, and 1999 Land Rover Discovery. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Discovery brake system features vacuum booster/master cylinder assembly, front/rear split hydraulic circuit, pressure reducing valve, 4-piston front calipers and 2-piston rear calipers. Primary circuit feeds the rear brakes through a pressure reducing valve and ABS modulator unit. Secondary circuit feeds front brakes through ABS modulator unit. For schematic of complete hydraulic circuit, including ABS portion, see ANTI-LOCK - DISCOVERY article.

Discovery II brake system features vacuum booster/master cylinder assembly, diagonally split hydraulic circuit, 2-piston front calipers and single-piston rear calipers. Primary circuit feeds front left and right rear brakes through ABS modulator unit. Secondary circuit feeds front right and left rear brakes through ABS modulator unit. For schematic of complete hydraulic circuit, including ABS portion, see ANTI-LOCK/TRACTION CONTROL - DISCOVERY II article.

Range Rover brake system features hydraulic brake booster/modulator unit, front/rear split hydraulic circuit, 2-piston front calipers and single-piston rear calipers. Hydraulic brake booster/modulator unit is mounted in same position as conventional vacuum booster/master cylinder assembly and serves much of the same function. Front calipers are supplied by the combined hydrostatic (master cylinder) and power (ABS pump) circuits. Rear calipers are supplied by the power circuit. For schematic of complete hydraulic circuit, including ABS portion, see ANTI-LOCK - RANGE ROVER article.

On all models, brake fluid reservoir cap includes a brake fluid level switch. Brake fluid level switch illuminates an instrument panel warning light when fluid is too low.

Parking brake is a single drum brake assembly mounted on the rear of the transfer case output shaft. Parking brake acts on rear driveshaft, and is cable-actuated by hand brake lever.

A vacuum-assisted brake booster is used to ease brake pedal application. A vacuum check valve, located in vacuum supply hose, prevents vacuum leakdown when engine is off.
