SITUATION
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NEEDED IN WORKSHOP MANUAL FOR STEERING WHEEL ALIGNMENT
Three instrument panel warning lights may illuminate when steering column repairs are performed - Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Anti-lock Brakes (ABS). "ERROR" messages may be displayed on the message center and it may not be possible to achieve equal turns from lock to center to lock. Several possible causes for these symptoms may be present.
- The new steering angle sensor requires calibration.
- The timing marks for aligning the steering wheel are not aligned
- The steering wheel has been aligned to the incorrect timing mark.
- The track rod ends are incorrectly set.
RESOLUTION
PERFORM STEERING ALIGNMENT CHECKS AFTER REPAIRS
Where the above symptoms are confirmed, visually check that the track rod ends are equally set. If the track rod ends are not set equally, follow the track rod end adjust procedure. After adjustment, or if the track rod ends are equal, follow the steering wheel alignment and steering angle sensor calibration procedures.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
TRACK ROD ENDS - VISUAL CHECK PROCEDURE
- Position the vehicle on a lift.
- Raise vehicle on lift to working height.
- Check the track rod end adjustmentNOTE: The track rods must expose the same amount of thread on either side, +/- 3mm (+/- 0.120 inch) tolerance.
- If the exposed threads are within the +/- 3 mm tolerance, lower the vehicle and go to the STEERING WHEEL ALIGNMENT procedure without any track rod adjustment.
- If the track rod end exposed threads are out of tolerance, go to the TRACK ROD END ADJUSTMENT procedure.
TRACK ROD END ADJUSTMENT
- Loosen the track rod end lock nuts.
- Adjust the track rods until the exposed threads are within the +/- 3 mm (0.120 inch) tolerance on both sides.
- Tighten the track rod end lock nuts to 55 N.m (40 lbf.ft.).
- Position the front road wheels to the straight-ahead position.
- Lower the vehicle lift.
- Continue with the steering wheel alignment and front wheel alignment procedures.
STEERING WHEEL ALIGNMENT
- Ensure the front road wheels are in the straight-ahead position.CAUTION: After switching off the ignition, wait 2 minutes before disconnecting the battery. Failure to wait 2 minutes will damage the navigation computer. Refer to RAVE Workshop Manual General Information, Electrical Precautions, Battery Disconnection.
- Disconnect the battery ground lead.
- Refer to RAVE Workshop Manual section 76.74.01 and remove the airbag.NOTE: The two steering column alignment marks are 105° apart. Two timing marks are stamped into the steering column and one timing mark stamped into the steering wheel. With the front road wheels in the straight-ahead position, the bottom mark on the steering column should be aligned with the steering wheel alignment mark. (Arrow "A" in Fig 1 )
- Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt to reveal the steering wheel alignment marks. (Fig 1 )
- Disconnect the steering wheel multi-plug and remove the steering wheel.
- Reposition the steering wheel, ensuring that the wheel mark is aligned with the bottom mark stamped on the steering column.NOTE: If the steering wheel is not in the straight-ahead position after aligning to the marks, then the steering wheel must be visually positioned into the straight-ahead position. The straight-ahead position is 1.75 turns from full lock in either direction.
- Install the steering wheel and connect multi-plug.
- Install the retaining bolt and tighten to 63 N.m (46 lbf.ft.).
- Refer to the RAVE Workshop Manual section 76.74.01 and install the airbag.
- Refer to RAVE Workshop Manual General Information, Electrical Precautions and connect the battery ground lead.
FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE
- If track rods have been adjusted, refer to RAVE Workshop Manual section 57.65.01.and adjust the front wheel alignment,
- If after aligning the front wheels the EBA, DSC and ABS lights are still illuminated or "ERROR" messages are displayed on the message center, complete the STEERING ANGLE SENSOR CALIBRATION PROCEDURE procedure.
STEERING ANGLE SENSOR CALIBRATION PROCEDURE
- Connect TestBook/T4 to the vehicle and load the New Range Rover V002 disc or a later version.
- Select "System Diagnostics".
- Follow the on screen instructions and select "ABS".
- Select "Vehicle Maintenance/Replace ECU/Replace Steering Angle ECU" to clear stored faults.
