Output Shaft Speed Sensor
The output shaft speed sensor is located in the rear of the transmission next to the parking lock assembly. It is an inductive sensor that is mounted at a magnet wheel with 36 teeth. The signal is transmitted to the auto gear box control unit over a shielded 2-wire connection. The output shaft speed sensor takes the place of the hydraulic governor and provides the TCM with speed information. The TCM can calculate the difference between input speed and output speed and provide the appropriate gear selection. Failure of the speed sensor will result in an automatic transmission default to 3rd or 4th in high range or maintenance of the current gear in low range (transmission will go into limp home mode).
A bayonet lock electrical connector in the automatic transmission casing, located to the rear of the gear selector lever, connects the solenoid valves and the output shaft speed sensor to the vehicle wiring.
