Power Steering Box: Inspection

  1. Remove rubber and plastic rings from piston rack, and discard. Check piston bore in steering box housing and piston for scoring and wear. Replace as necessary. Replace hydraulic feed tube if damaged or bent, and tighten fittings to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. Check sector shaft roller for no side play. If there is sector shaft roller side play, replace sector shaft. Check steering box adjuster screw threads, and repair or replace as necessary. Steering box adjuster screw end play should be 0.006" (0.15 mm) or less. If adjuster screw end play is more than specified, replace adjuster screw. Check sector shaft bearing contact areas and gear teeth for excessive or uneven wear. Replace as necessary. Check sector shaft cover plate and bearing. If worn or damaged, replace steering box. Cover plate and bearing are not available.
  3. Check input shaft worm, valve and torsion bar assembly bearing contact areas and worm track. Bearing contact areas and worm track must be smooth and not indented. Check for wear on torsion bar pin. There should be no free play between input shaft and torsion bar or between torsion bar and worm. Replace assembly if there is any evidence of wear.
  4. Check valve sleeve teflon ring seals for cuts, scratches and grooves. Ensure teflon ring seals can rotate in grooves. If necessary, replace all 3 teflon ring seals using Ring Expander/Installer (LRT-57-019). Remove teflon ring seals, because expander/installer will not fit over installed ring seals and may damage grooves if attempted.
  5. Warm expander/installer and teflon ring seals. With teflon ring seals installed onto expander/installer, slide expander/installer over valve and worm assembly. Install teflon ring seals into each groove and remove expander/installer. Install Ring Compressor (LRT-57-020) over teflon ring seals and allow to cool.
  6. Check ball bearing races, cups and cages for wear and general condition. If ball cage has worn against bearing cup or ball bearings are not held in place by cage, replace bearing assembly.
  7. Check thrust pad and adjuster thrust pad seat for scoring or wear. Replace as necessary. Replace adjuster "O" ring.
  8. Check hydraulic piston and rack teeth for excessive wear. Ensure thrust pad bearing surface on rack is free from scoring and wear. Ensure piston outer diameters and piston seal groove are free from burring, scoring or damage. Warm NEW piston seal, install into piston groove and slide piston assembly into steering box with rack tube outwards.
NOTE: When installing NEW seals, lubricate with specified power steering fluid.
