Power Steering Box Backlash Adjustment: Defender
- Set parking brake and place A/T in "P" position. Raise and support vehicle. Using a Ball Joint Separator (LRT-57-018), disconnect drag link at pitman arm. Gently turn steering wheel to full right lock position. Turn steering wheel back exactly 2 turns.
- Loosen steering box adjusting screw lock nut. Move pitman arm back and forth while an assistant slowly tightens steering box adjusting screw. Tighten lock nut when backlash has been removed. Slowly turn steering wheel lock-to-lock, checking for backlash, binding or tightness. If necessary, loosen steering box adjusting screw lock nut and repeat adjustment. If adjustment is okay, go to next step.
- Ensure front wheels are aligned and in a straight-ahead position. Ensure length of drag link between ball joint centers is 36.4" (924 mm). Connect drag link to pitman arm and tighten nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m). Lower vehicle and road test. If steering wheel is not centered when vehicle is moving straight ahead, go to next step. If steering wheel is centered, ensure alignment is correct. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
- If steering wheel is to the right, drag link is too short. If steering wheel is to the left, drag link is too long. Adjust drag link until steering wheel points straight ahead when vehicle is moving straight ahead. Ensure alignment is correct. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
