Diagnostic Aids (Defender 90 & Discovery)

  1. Using TestBook or OBD-II compliant scan tool retrieve and record any DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Retrieve and record freeze frame data. See FREEZE FRAME DATA  . If DTC P0500 is set, follow specified TestBook testing procedures. If TestBook procedures do not resolve problem, go to next step. If DTC P0500 is not set and VSS malfunction is intermittent, go to step  4 .
  2. Connect a Snap-On Personal Automotive Computer (PAC). Connect positive lead to ECM Red 36-pin connector terminal No. 27 (Yellow/Pink wire). Set Snap-On PAC to a time base of 200 mS and a range of 0-16 volts. Connect Snap-On PAC ground lead to battery ground.
  3. Position vehicle on a flat surface with parking brake off and transmission in Neutral. Position wheel stops so vehicle can safely travel about 2-3 feet. Turn ignition on. Carefully push vehicle forward a few feet and observe VSS signal wave pattern. About every 8 inches of vehicle movement VSS should pulse between zero and battery voltage. If voltage change is not as specified, replace VSS. When DTC repairs are completed, perform DRIVE CYCLE: "B"  .
  4. An intermittent VSS malfunction can be indicated by a freeze frame speed greater than 110 MPH and an engine speed of 2000 RPM or a vehicle speed of zero MPH. An intermittent VSS malfunction may cause MIL to illuminate and misfire DTCs P0300, P0301, P0303, P0305, P0307, and/or P1316 to set. An intermittent VSS malfunction may cause an intermittent power loss, engine surging or hesitation at high speed, and/or an inoperative or fluctuating speedometer. Check VSS circuits for opens or shorts and repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If circuits are okay, replace VSS and recheck. When DTC repairs are completed, perform DRIVE CYCLE: "B"  .
