Upper Steering Column: Installation

  1. Position steering column in vehicle. Install brake pedal. Position ignition barrel to steering column and rotate inner shaft to line up slot with barrel plunger. Position ignition barrel clamp to steering column and evenly tighten, but DO NOT shear, both shear bolts. Temporarily install steering wheel. Operate ignition switch and lock mechanism several times to ensure proper operation. When operation is confirmed, tighten shear bolts until heads shear.
  2. To continue installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering column mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m). When instrument panel is secured, connect negative battery cable. Rotate turn signal indictor canceling ring so that slots are vertical and lug with arrow points to the left. Install steering wheel with finisher attachment lug at bottom, ensuring indicator canceling forks locate in ring slots.
  3. Install steering wheel using a NEW washer and tighten nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 N.m). Install horn pad and ensure front wheels and steering wheel are in a straight-ahead position. Using match marks, align and install upper "U" joint-to-steering column to steering shaft. Tighten pinch bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (24 N.m). Install air inlet hose.

  1. Position steering column in footwell, ensuring splines on steering column and "U" joint are correctly mated. Install rubber boot. Install, but DO NOT tighten, "U" joint pinch bolt. Install in order (DO NOT tighten) nuts, bolts and washers for the upper mount, lower mount and support bracket. Ensure steering column is aligned to all mounting positions.
  2. Tighten steering column mounting nuts and bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m). Tighten "U" joint pinch bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m). Connect steering column switch connector and ignition switch connectors. Align direction indicator cancellation bushing. Remove adhesive tape and install rotary coupler to combination switch. If rotary coupler must be centered because of tampering, etc., go to next step. If centering rotary coupler is not necessary, go to step 4).
  3. Depress rotary coupler locking peg and gently rotate coupler counterclockwise as far as inner tape will allow. DO NOT apply excessive force beyond what tape will allow. Maximum rotation for rotary coupler from lock-to-lock is 5 turns. If limit is exceeded, the inner tape is broken and rotary coupler must be replaced. When rotary coupler is rotated fully counterclockwise to limit position, rotate coupler clockwise 2.5 turns to obtain centered position.
  4. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Position steering wheel to steering column, and feed harness through wheel hub. Remove adhesive tape from rotary coupler. Locate rotary coupler drive pegs and indicator switch self-cancel pegs in steering wheel hub, and push wheel fully onto steering column taper.
  5. Install steering wheel nut and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 N.m). Connect rotary connector. Install air bag module and tighten retaining screws to 71 INCH lbs. (8 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Ensure all connectors are connected. Connect positive battery cable, then negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position from a position away from air bags. Ensure all indicator lights perform bulb check.

  1. Position steering column in vehicle and engage pedal box studs. Install steering column mounting bolts at firewall and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 N.m). Install steering column mounting nuts at pedal box and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 N.m). Install steering column mounting bolts at pedal box and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 N.m). Install blower motor duct.
  2. Connect column connectors, ignition lock barrel illumination light and secure harness clips. Connect air bag system and washer/wiper switches to combination switch connector. Install upper and lower steering column covers. Connect courtesy light and install lower instrument panel. Install intermediate shaft. See INTERMEDIATE SHAFT .
