Anti-Theft Systems: Operation
Power door locking function is controlled by the theft alarm unit. Vehicle can be locked using door key, door switch, or transmitter. Vehicle can be unlocked using transmitter or using door key. Theft alarm system and immobilization features are deactivated using transmitter. If theft alarm unit detects that lock actuators could be overheating, power door lock system will shut down for about 15 seconds.
Status of anti-theft system is indicated by hazard lights, theft alarm LED and horns. Hazard lights will flash up to 3 times when system is armed, and one time when system is disarmed. Theft alarm LED flashes to indicate the following conditions:
- Slow Flash - Immobilized only, or immobilized and armed.
- Rapid Flash - Volumetrically armed.
- Intermittent Rapid Flash - Perimetrically armed.
- No Flash for 10 Seconds - Mislock.
- Continuously Lit - Immobilized and driver's door open or ignition turned on.
Anti-theft system provides perimeter (perimetric) protection against unauthorized opening of doors, hood and tailgate. This function is also triggered when driver's door switch is lifted and ignition switch is turned on. Perimetric arming is activated when vehicle is locked using door key or transmitter. Alarm can be disarmed using transmitter or door key. If system is armed, locking or unlocking door with door key must be done in less than 5 seconds, or alarm will sound. Cranking function is disabled when armed.
In volumetric mode, an ultrasonic sensor is used to detect movement inside the vehicle. Ultrasonic sensor emits an air pressure carrier wave and receives the wave back. If any movement disturbs the wave, alarm will be triggered and cranking function will be disabled. Volumetric protection is turned on and off using the transmitter. If vehicle is armed volumetrically, it cannot be disarmed using door key. When ultrasonic sensor is activated, it monitors movement within vehicle for 15 seconds before detecting or responding to intrusions. If movement is detected, arming is delayed until a 15 second quiet period has elapsed. If continuous movement is detected, alarm will not arm volumetrically.
When an intrusion is detected, horns will sound and hazard lights will flash for 30 seconds. Alarm must be retriggered before horns will sound again. An inertia switch, incorporated in theft alarm unit, will cause central locking actuators to unlock and hazard lights to flash if vehicle receives a sufficient impact. Power door locks will be disabled for 0-5 minutes. To reset, turn ignition off. Turn ignition on after a 5 minute time period.
After a certain time period, engine will be immobilized, even if anti-theft system is disarmed. Vehicle can only be mobilized using transmitter or door key (using emergency key access code). When theft alarm unit immobilizes vehicle, it sends a signal to Engine Control Module (ECM), which deactivates engine management system until a mobilize signal is received from theft alarm unit. Immobilization unit provides interface between ECM and immobilized features. Engine will be immobilized after the following conditions:
- Vehicle is locked using transmitter.
- Vehicle is locked using door key.
- After 30 second period when ignition has been turned off and driver's door has been opened.
- After 5 minute period when ignition has been turned off or alarm disarmed.
Engine can be mobilized by performing any of the following:
- Placing transmitter near ignition switch when ignition is turned on.
- Pressing unlock button on transmitter.
- Pressing lock button on transmitter with ignition turned on.
- Using door key to enter Emergency Key Access (EKA) code.
Passive coil, located near ignition switch, excites a receiving coil in transmitter which causes transmitter to send a remobilization signal to theft alarm unit. Under normal circumstances, Engine Immobilization Warning Light (EIWL) will not illuminate. If an attempt is made to start vehicle when transmitter is detached from key or is malfunctioning, EIWL will illuminate after a 2 second period.
System will enter a partially armed mode if door, hood or tailgate is open when system is armed. Engine will be immobilized and cranking will be inhibited. If ignition switch is turned to START position, alarm will sound for the following conditions:
- If any door causes partial arming, and hood or tailgate is opened.
- If tailgate causes partial arming, and any door or hood is opened.
- If hood causes partial arming, and any door or tailgate is opened. Volumetric protection is also armed.
- If any two of the above causes partial arming, third item (door, tailgate or hood) is still protected.
If doors, tailgate or hood is subsequently closed, system will fully arm after a 5 second delay.
Transmitter and ECM are programmed with a unique set of random codes, so that a different code is transmitted to ECM whenever transmitter is used. If transmitter power supply is removed, it is necessary to resynchronize transmitter. See RESYNCHRONIZATION under PROGRAMMING.
When batteries in transmitter are low, theft alarm unit will enter a low battery mode. In this mode, theft alarm LED will flash and hazard lights will not flash when alarm is disarmed.
