SITUATION:
COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE READS INACCURATELY OR ERRATICALLY
As the result of ground circuit failure the temperature gauge on a Range Rover can indicate a non-existent overheat situation or it may be erratic.
RESOLUTION:
REPLACE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
Excessive resistance between the sensor ground and the BeCM reference ground can cause this inaccurate reading. After confirming that an overheat condition does not exist, the latest design 2-pin sensor can be installed. This sensor will require the use of an adapter harness (link lead) that connects directly to the BeCM reference ground.
NOTE:
The repairs outlined in this TIB are to be performed to resolve customer complaint of the symptoms described.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
TEST
NOTE:
Perform the following test starting with a cold engine to determine if an actual fault exists with the coolant temperature gauge.
- Check coolant level and top-up as necessary. Ensure that all hoses and belt are in good condition.
- Ensure that the radiator is free of obstructions.
- Start engine and switch on all electrical consumers.
- Observe the temperature gauge:
- If the temperature gauge operates erratically, indicates an overheat condition or the temperature warning light is illuminated, install a 2-pin coolant temperature sensor using the procedure below.
- If the gauge reads normally, proceed to the next step.
- Connect TestBook to the vehicle in 'Road Test Mode' using the supplied power connector.
- Select the coolant temperature under GEMS real time monitoring.WARNING: Do not drive the vehicle and use TestBook at the same time. Have an assistant operate TestBook.NOTE: The GEMS coolant temperature reading shown on TestBook is several degrees lower than the actual coolant temperature. This is a result of the GEMS software conversion and does not indicate a fault.NOTE: The coolant temperature warning light should come on above a TestBook indicated temperature of 107°C.
- Operate vehicle in an attempt to duplicate the gauge overheat indication.
- If the gauge indication shows an overheat condition or the coolant temperature warning light comes on, note the temperature reading on TestBook and immediately turn off the engine.
- If the coolant temperature warning light comes on or the gauge indicates an overheat condition at a temperature BELOW 107°C, install a new 2-pin coolant temperature sensor using the procedure outlined below.
- If the coolant temperature warning light comes on or the gauge indicates an overheat condition AT OR ABOVE 107°C, the gauge is not at fault. Diagnose and repair the overheat condition using normal procedures. Installing the 2-pin sensor will not cure the symptom in this case.
REPLACE TEMPERATURE SENSOR
CAUTION:
The engine must be cold before draining the coolant.
- Partially drain the cooling system into a clean container, following instructions found in Workshop Manual Section 26, Operation 26.10.01. (Save the drained coolant for reuse.)
- Loosen hose clamp and remove upper hose from intake manifold.
- Remove two bolts securing water outlet to intake manifold.
- Remove and discard water outlet.
- Clean gasket surface and install new ERR7083 water outlet to intake manifold using new gasket.
- Torque water outlet bolts to 24-30 N.m (18-22 lbf.ft).
- Install new temperature sensor on water outlet and torque sensor to 20 N.m (15 lbf.ft).
- Connect link lead STC3918 to temperature sensor.
- Route link lead as shown in Fig 1 .
- Connect black lead to engine harness ground point E181 on right hand side of engine compartment. Ensure that ground connection is clean and tight.
- Locate connector C506 (black 13-pin) beneath coolant expansion tank.
- Remove existing green wire from cavity 8 and tape wire back onto harness (Fig 2 ).
- Install green/yellow wire of link lead in cavity 8 of connector C506.
- Tie wrap harness at locations indicated by arrows in Fig 1 .
- Refit the coolant drain plug to the radiator.NOTE: Ensure that the radiator bleed hose is clear prior to refill.
- Clear the bleed hose as follows:
- Remove expansion tank cap.
- Remove radiator bleed hose from radiator.
- Blow through the pipe with air line.
- Reconnect the hose.
- Refill the system using the coolant previously drained off.
- Top-up with Land Rover coolant to the correct level using Workshop Manual, Operation 26.10.01.
- Ensure that the anti-freeze/water mix is 50/50%.
