SERVICE INFORMATION

Enclosed with this bulletin are the explanations for each item on the preventative maintenance schedules announced in Service Bulletin G97-027 . These explanations define the scope of work recommended in the schedules. The information is also printed in the PassPort to Service for 1998 vehicles. Some explanatory notes have also been added to distinguish between scheduled and non-scheduled items.

The key to successful implementation of the new schedules is to work to the new schedules exclusively. It is important to understand that the schedules define the minimum preventative maintenance required by all vehicles. On a case-by-case basis, additional work may be required at an additional cost. The extent of additional work depends entirely on how and where the vehicle is used and cared for. Some examples are:

The aim of the simplified schedules is to avoid charging every owner for services like the examples above on a scheduled basis. Owners who do not require these services will benefit from a savings. Please be sure that all customer contact personnel clearly understand how to advise owners in the event of additional needs.

The service schedules do not include time to check for additional work. It is believed that additional work needed and not requested by the owner will be apparent during the vehicle handling and service. Of course, always check for open service actions or recall campaigns.

TIPS ON DISCOVERY MAINTENANCE SERVICE SCHEDULE

The vehicle owner or driver must perform the Owner Maintenance checks listed in the Owner's Manual. These items are not part of the Maintenance Service Schedule.

Below are brief explanations of the items listed on the Maintenance Service Schedule. Only a qualified technician should perform the work while following procedures in the Discovery Workshop Manual and using correct methods, tools, equipment and safety precautions. Some additional details and specifications are provided in the Owner's Manual.

MINOR SERVICE (7,500 MILES ETC.) - DISCOVERY

VEHICLE EXTERIOR

Inspect Wiper Blades.

Look for wear or deterioration and replace if necessary.

NOTE: Blades are not included in service. Normal wear is not covered by the warranty.

UNDER HOOD

Inspect Coolant Hoses.

Look for signs of leaks or hose deterioration. Inspect the full exterior surface of all radiator and heater hoses. Replace at first sign of deterioration. Check worm gear clamps for tightness. DO NOT over-tighten.

UNDER VEHICLE

Inspect Exhaust System & Heat Shields.

Look for damage, deterioration or leaks. Exhaust gas contains deadly carbon monoxide and it must exit only at the end of the tailpipe. Be sure all exhaust heat shields are in place and secure. Be sure exhaust system hangars are in place and in good condition.

Inspect Tires.

Be sure tires comply with the manufacturer's specifications. Look for cuts, bulges or other signs of damage. Also look for wheel or valve stem damage. Examine wear patterns and determine cause if unusual. Be sure that tread wear limits are not exceeded. Adjust pressures if necessary, including spare.

NOTE: DO NOT rotate tires. Alignment check is not part of the scheduled work.
Inspect Brake Lines.

Look for damage to all metal lines and flexible hoses from engine compartment to brake calipers.

Inspect Brake Pads, Calipers & Disks.

Evaluate brake pad wear. Look for fluid leaks at calipers and examine brake disk surface condition. Refer to Workshop Manual for specifications.

NOTE: Worn out brake pads ARE NOT covered by the warranty.
Change Engine Oil & Replace Filter.

Always replace sealing washer on drain plug and tighten drain plug to specified torque. Always fill oil filter with clean oil and lubricate sealing surface before installing. Refer to specifications in Owner's Manual for correct oil viscosity depending on seasonal temperatures. Always check for leaks at filter and drain plug before driving.

ANNUAL SERVICE (15,000 MILES ETC.) - DISCOVERY

All minor service items plus:

VEHICLE EXTERIOR

Lubricate Door Locks & Check Straps, Hood Latch & Safety Catch, Fuel Door Hinges.

Use graphite based lock lubricant on lock cylinders. Use white lithium grease on check straps, hood latch and safety catch pivot. Use motor oil on fuel door hinges.

VEHICLE INTERIOR

Check/Adjust Parking Brake.

Brake should be fully applied after three clicks of ratchet pawl. Adjust for shoe wear at drum backing plate. Do not adjust shoes too tight or brake will drag causing drive train noises when coming to a stop. Adjust cable length to compensate for cable stretch after shoe adjustment. See Workshop Manual for details on these adjustments.

NOTE: Service includes check only, not adjustment if needed.
Check Seat Belts.

Check security of mounting points, function of buckles and locking operation of inertia reels. Check webbing for damage.

UNDER HOOD

Inspect Radiator & A/C Condenser.

Look for debris or blockage behind grille and in front of coils which would impair engine cooling or A/C performance. Back-flush to remove accumulations. This should be done regularly after off-road driving in deep water or mud.

NOTE: Service is just a look to see if cleaning is needed. Cleaning is not included.
Check Power Steering Fluid Level.

Clean reservoir cap before removing to prevent contamination from entering system. Fluid level should be at the upper mark with the engine not running. Do not check with engine running. Use only ATF Dexron III to top-up.

Check Brake Fluid Level.

Fluid is visible through the transparent reservoir. The fluid level must be between the upper and lower marks. It is normal for fluid level to drop slightly as brake pads wear Clean reservoir cap before removing and use only DOT fluid from a sealed container if adding fluid. Always investigate and rectify the cause if fluid level drops to the minimum mark.

UNDER VEHICLE

Lubricate Drive Shafts & U-Joints.

Clean grease fittings before attaching grease gun. Using multipurpose lithium grease. Lubricate sliding joints on drive shafts and universal joints.

Inspect Steering Rods/Joints/Dust Covers.

Look at all steering components for signs of damage. Compress and extend ball joints to check for play and replace if present. Examine rubber boots on ball joints for cuts or damage and replace joint if contaminated.

Inspect Shock Absorbers.

Look for damage or leaks. Slight dampness around seals is not abnormal. Serious fluid leaks are obvious and require repair.

Inspect Suspension Links & Mountings.

Look for bushing wear or damage to front radius arms and panhard rod along with rear trailing links, A-frame and ball joint.

Inspect Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring.

Make sure the lead/harness to wheel sensors is secure and undamaged.

Inspect Fuel Lines.

Examine the full length of metal fuel lines and flexible hoses between the fuel tank and engine. Look for damage or chafing.
