Power Steering Box: Installation

  1. Refit steering box to chassis side member, and tighten 4 bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 N.m). See Figure .
  2. Connect pinch bolt securing universal joint to power steering box. Tighten bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 N.m). See Figure .
  3. Install tie bar, and tighten 3 fixings. Starting with tie bar to panhard rod, then loosen all 3 by one complete turn. See Figure .
  4. Check steering box, adjust if necessary. See POWER STEERING BOX & DRAG LINK  under ADJUSTING.
  5. Refit drag link and secure. See Figure .
  6. Lower vehicle to ground.
  7. Remove plugs and refit pipes to steering box. Tighten 16 mm thread to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Tighten 14 mm thread to 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m).
  8. Remove filler cap. Fill reservoir to oil level mark on dipstick. Use recommended fluid. See CAPACITY  and FLUID TYPE  under LUBRICATION.
  9. Recheck fluid level and replace cap.
  10. CAUTION: Do not maintain this pressure for more than 30 seconds in any one minute, to avoid oil overheating and possible seal damage.
  11. With engine running, test steering system for leaks by holding steering in both full lock directions.
  12. WARNING: Do not test drive vehicle on public highway.
  13. Test drive vehicle using both full lock directions, to settle steering components. If possible, drive vehicle over speed bumps and include harsh braking.
  14. Drive vehicle in a straight line on level ground and stop.
  15. Tighten tie bar-to-panhard rod mounting arm to 81 ft. lbs. (110 N.m).
  16. Tighten 2 fixings securing tie bar to steering box to 60 ft. lbs. (81 N.m).
  17. Ensure steering wheel is correctly aligned when wheels are positioned straight ahead.
  18. If necessary reposition steering wheel. See STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
  19. Road test vehicle.
