Oil Pump: Inspection

  1. Check oil pump gears for wear or scores.
  2. Fit oil pump gears and shaft into timing gear cover. See Fig 3.
  3. Place a straight edge across gears. See Fig 3.
  4. Check clearance between straight edge and timing gear cover. If less than 0.05 mm (0.002"), check timing gear cover gear recess for wear. See Fig 3.
  5. Check oil pressure relief valve for wear or scores.
  6. Check sides of relief valve spring for wear or signs of collapse.
  7. Clean wire screen filter for relief valve.
  8. Check fit of relief valve in its bore. The valve must be an easy slide fit with no perceptible side movement.
