Component Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 Kia Niro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: PIN code is programmed in Smart key unit, Transponder, ESCL.
  1. If the Smart key unit is not registered with PIN, key teaching process is not proceeded
  2. Registering PIN is available after Smart Key unit is neutralized.
  3. Neutralization of Engine ECM is available with KDS/GDS (Registering PIN code)
  4. If the virgin engine ECM is installed on vehicle, Engine ECM is automatically programmed PIN code by Smart Key unit
  5. Registering PIN code is only possible for virgin or neutralized status.

Smart Key ECM Learning
* All Learning procedure is able to do with a KDS/GDS in the vehicle's ignition key off state.
  1. Correct PIN Code must be recorded and kept in hand prior to perform Smart Key Code Saving.
  2. In case of SMK Unit is replaced, Smart Key Code Saving must be performed.
  3. In case wrong PIN signal is inputted 3 times, Neutral Mode or Teaching is prohibited for 1 hour.
  4. In case battery is discharged during process of Neutral Mode or Teaching, timer will restart and wait for 1 hour to redo.
Inspection Condition Inspection Procedure Reference
  1. Ignition "ON" and Engine "OFF".
1. Connect KDS/GDS to Data Link Connector (DLC).
2. Perform "SMK Neutralize" with KDS/GDS (below).

3. Perform "ECM Neutralize" with KDS/GDS Fig 1Fig 4 to Fig 5
4. Perform "Smart Key Code Saving" unit with KDS/GDS Fig 6 to Fig 11

  • Fault might be intermittent and caused either by poor contact in connectors or wiring harness, or it has been repaired and control module memory is not cleared yet. Thoroughly check terminal of battery, all connectors (and connections) for looseness, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, and/or damage.
  • Repair or replace as necessary and go to "VERIFICATION OF REPAIR " procedure.
No Good 
  • Carefully redo this troubleshooting guide steps.
  • If problem still occurs, replace Smart key unit and then go to "VERIFICATION OF VEHICLE REPAIR " procedure.
