Armature Test

  1. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between commutator and core. See Fig 1. If continuity exists, replace armature.
  2. Check continuity between commutator and shaft. See Fig 2. If continuity exists, replace armature.
  3. Place armature on "V" blocks. Using a dial indicator, measure runout at commutator. If runout is not within specification, repair armature with a lathe or replace armature. See Fig 3.
  4. Measure diameter of commutator. See Fig 4. Replace armature if diameter of commutator is at, or less than, grind limit. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  5. If commutator surface is dirty, wipe it with a cloth; if it is rough, repair it with a lathe or fine sandpaper.
  6. Check depth of mold between commutator segments. Replace armature if depth of mold is at, or less than minimum. See Fig 5. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS .
