Steering Rack Boot: Removal

  1. Lift front of vehicle and support it with safety stands.
  2. Remove wheel and tire.
  3. Remove plastic undercover.
  4. Turn wheels fully.
  5. Pull out cotter pin, and remove nut.
  6. Remove tie rod from knuckle arm with SST (0K130 283 021). 
    NOTE: Replace nut temporarily so screw thread does not become damaged.

  7. Mark alignment of tie rod, jam nut and tie rod end as shown.

  8. Loosen tie rod jam nut, and then remove tie rod.
  9. Secure tie rod end in a vise.
  10. Place a chisel against dust boot, holding it at angle shown.
  11. Carefully remove tie rod boot, working around boot.
    NOTE: Do not  scar area where the tie rod seals to the dust boot.

  12. Loosen steering rack boot retaining clip.
  13. Remove tie rod jam nut.
  14. Remove steering rack boot.
  15. Remove boot clip.
