Steering Gear: Notes
REMOVAL
CAUTION:
Anytime the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) is mounted on the steering column the steering shaft must be kept from turning or else SCCM damage will occur. Some vehicles do not have an internal lock mechanisms, so the steering column shaft must be preventing from rotating through use of a suitable tool.
- Secure the steering wheel to prevent it from turning.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to TIRES AND WHEELS, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped, remove the front skid plate. Refer to PLATE, SKID, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped, remove the front suspension skid plate. Refer to PLATE, SKID, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped with active air dam, remove the active air dam. Refer to AIR DAM, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1 - Air Reservoir Bolts 2 - Wire Harness Routing Clip - If equipped with air suspension, disengage the wire harness routing clip.
- If equipped with air suspension, remove the air reservoir bolts and position the air reservoir away for the steering gear bolts.
1 - Intermediate Shaft Lower Pinch Bolt - Remove and DISCARD the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
- Disengage both outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to TIE ROD, STEERING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
1 - Torque Sensor Wire Harness Connectors - DO NOT
disconnect the torque sensor wire harness connectors.
1 - Steering Gear Bolts 2 - Wire Harness Connectors - Disconnect the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) module wire harness connectors.
- Disengage the wire harness routing clips from the steering gear.
- Remove the steering gear bolts.
1 - Shield 2 - Push-Pins - Disengage the two push-pins.
- Lift the shield straight upward to disengage the integrated clip and remove the shield.
- Remove the steering gear.
INSTALLATION
Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.
- Install a NEW intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
- Using the scan tool select: Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Miscellaneous Functions, Steering Angle Calibration, and follow the prompts to calibrate the steering angle.
- Perform the Electric Power Steering (EPS) Verification Test. Refer to EPS VERIFICATION TEST .
- Perform the wheel alignment standard procedure. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
