Description And Operation
DESCRIPTION
| 1 - E-Shifter |
The Electronic Shifter Module (ESM) is part of the shifter assembly called the E-Shifter. The E-Shifter is an electronic Shift-by-Wire device that is mounted to the vehicle sled. If it is necessary to service the ESM, the entire shifter must be replaced.
The shifter offers PRNDM+- modes of function. The M selection (Manual mode) is engaged by moving the shift-lever sideways to M. Requests to up/down shift are achieved by moving the lever fore/aft once in the manual position.
OPERATION
The shifter assembly incorporates an electronic control module called an ESM. The ESM communicates with the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and other modules on the Controller Area Network-Chassis (CAN C) bus.
The ESM is connected to the vehicle wire harness with a single 12 way connector located at the shifter.
The ESM can set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) when a fault is detected.
The ESM processes the up/downshift requests when operating in manual mode and communicates the request to the TCM.
The ESM incorporates a solenoid that allows the lever to be locked for purposes of Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) function.
The ESM contains a lever-lock function that is controlled electronically by the TCM via CAN message, and mechanically by the release trigger on the knob.
Indication of selected/non-selected gears is provided via illumination of PRNDM+- characters adjacent to the shift knob.
Lever-position feedback is provided via mechanical detents, which also keep the lever in the position it is placed in.
