Gear Shift Cables

REMOVAL 

CAUTION:

If any of the shift cables or shift cable brackets are removed, the cable adjustment must be checked. This adjustment is critical. If not set correctly, transmission damage is possible.

NOTE:

The transmission shift cables are serviced as a set. The cable ends are to large to be drawn through the holes in the rubber floor plug.

  1. Remove the floor console. Refer to CONSOLE, FLOOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  2. Disengage the retainers holding the cable housings to the shifter bracket by grabbing the collar on the cable and sliding it forward, while gently lifting up on the cable.

  3. Pry the neutral gate cable end to the right toward the passenger seat to disengage the cable end from the shifter pin.

  4. Release the spring-clip holding the range cable end to the fulcrum ball under the shifter handle and push the cable end downward to disengage it.
  5. Remove the nuts from the shifter cable grommet, push the shifter cable grommet downward, taking care not to tear the shifter cable grommet.

  6. Push the cables down through the shifter cable grommet hole.
  7. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  8. Disengage the retainer holding the range cable to the transmission bracket and lift the range cable housing from the bracket.

  9. Pry the range cable upward to disengage the cable end (1) from the counterweighted gearshift lever.
  10. Disengage the retainer holding the neutral gate cable to the transmission bracket and lift the cable housing from the bracket.
  11. Pry the neutral gate cable end to the left (driver side) to disengage the cable end from the shift lever
  12. Remove the cables from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION 

CAUTION:

If any of the shift cables or shift cable brackets are removed, the cable adjustment must be checked. This adjustment is critical. If not set correctly, transmission damage is possible.

NOTE:

The transmission shift cables are serviced as a set. The cable ends are too large to be drawn through the holes in the rubber floor plug.

Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Insert the shift cables through the access hole in the floor pan under the vehicle.
  3. Push the rubber floor plug upward into the access hole and align the studs to the mounting holes in the underside of the floor pan.
  4. Route the cables under the vehicle and position the retainers in the shift cable bracket (range select cable located on top, neutral gate cable located on bottom). Push down on the cable retainers to snap them into place.

  5. Connect the cable ends to the shift levers at the transmission (range select the on top, neutral gate on the left side).
  6. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  7. Tighten the shifter cable grommet nuts to the proper torque specifications.

  8. Route the range cable under the shifter and engage the cable housings into position on the shifter bracket. Push to the left to lock the cable housings in place.

  9. Connect the range cable end to the ball end under the shifter, ensuring the retaining clip snaps into place. Position the neutral gate cable end to the shift lever and snap it in place.
    NOTE:

    Do not lock the neutral gate cable adjustment yet.

  10. Position the gear shifter in third gear inside the vehicle.
  11. While holding the shifter forward against the blocker in third gear, depress the locking tab to lock the adjuster.

  12. Verify the shifter goes into all gears smoothly and there is no resistance or excessive force needed to shift into all gears.
  13. Install the floor console assembly. Refer to CONSOLE, FLOOR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  14. Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
