Rear Axle Assembly - M220
REMOVAL
- Raise and support the vehicle
Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Position and secure a lift under the axle.
1 - Front Driveshaft Flange 2 - Front Axle Flange - Index mark the driveshaft flange and the axle pinion flange for installation reference.
- Remove and DISCARD
the driveshaft bolts. Remove and secure the driveshaft.CAUTION:
Driveshaft removal is a two-person operation. Never allow the driveshaft to hang from the center bearing, or while only connected to the transmission or rear axle flanges. An assistant is required. If a driveshaft section is hung unsupported, damage may occur to the shaft, joint and center bearing from over-angulation. This may result in driveline vibrations or component failure.
1 - Vent Hose - Remove the vent hose from the axle tube.NOTE:
When servicing or replacing the rear axle you MUST replace the rear hose vent fitting.
- If equipped, disconnect the power hop damper. Refer to DAMPER, POWER HOP, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- If equipped, disconnect the axle locker wire harness connectors.
- Remove the brake calipers and rotors from the axle. Refer to ROTOR, BRAKE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- As necessary, remove the park brake cables from the axle. Refer to CABLE, PARKING BRAKE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Disconnect the rear wheel speed sensor wire harness connectors.
1 - Track Bar 2 - Axle Bracket - Remove the track bar bolt and nut and remove the track bar from the axle bracket.
1 - Stabilizer Links 2 - Shock Absorbers - Remove the stabilizer bar link bolts and nuts and remove the stabilizer links from the axle brackets.
- Remove the shock absorber bolts and nuts and remove the shock absorbers from the axle brackets.
1 - Upper Control Arm Bolts 2 - Lower Control Arm Bolts - Remove the upper control arm bolts and nuts and upper control arms from the axle brackets.
- Loosen the lower control arm bolts and nuts and lower the axle enough to remove the coil springs and spring insulators.
- Remove the lower control arm from the axle brackets.
- Lower and remove the axle.
INSTALLATION
Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.
The weight of the vehicle must be supported by the springs before the control arms and track bar are tightened. Failure to follow these instruction will cause premature bushing failure.
- The track bar, upper and lower control arm bolts should be loosely tightened until all other components are tightened.
1 - Front Driveshaft Flange 2 - Front Axle Flange - Install the driveshaft with the driveshaft flange and pinion flange reference marks aligned. Driveshaft bolts must be replaced with NEW bolts. If NEW bolts are not available clean the old bolts and apply Mopar® Lock and Seal Adhesive or equivalent.
- Torque the track bar, upper and lower control arm bolts last with the weight of the vehicle on the axle.
