Blind Spot Monitor System: Notes
DESCRIPTION
The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Rear Cross-Path (RCP) detection systems include the following major components:
| 1. | Refer to BLIND SPOT DISPLAY (BSD) . |
| 2. | Refer to RADIO RECEIVER MODULE (RRM) . |
| 3. | Refer to BLIND SPOT MODULE (BSM)/BLIND SPOT SENSOR (BSS) . |
| 4. | Refer to DOOR MODULE (DDM) OR (PDM) . |
| 5. | Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) . |
| 6. | Refer to BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) . |
The BSM system continually monitors blind zones on either side of the vehicle using radar sensors. If a vehicle is sensed in the zones, the driver will be notified with a yellow + triangle icon in the corresponding side view mirror. There is a driver selectable chime in the driver assistance settings menu in the radio that will alert the driver of an object in the blind spot zone when the turn signal is pressed.
Another function of the BSM system is the rear cross-path detection system. Rear cross-path detection monitors for vehicles/objects in perpendicular relationships to the vehicle when maneuvering in reverse in parking lots and provides feedback to the driver using the same audible chimes and visual icons.
OPERATION
Three modes of operation can be selected in driver assistance settings:
- Default mode, lights only - Light Emitting Diode (LED) icons will illuminate the outside mirrors when an object is detected in the blind spot zone.
- Lights and Chime - LED icons will illuminate in outside mirrors and a chime will be issued when the turn signal is depressed and a target is in the blind spot zone.
- System OFF - System can be configured to OFF. BSM system will continue to report the current mode of "disabled" which is displayed on the IPC menu at ignition on.
The BSM system functions include:
- Monitoring the vehicle's blind spots and notifying the driver when another vehicle is present.
- Using radar sensors located in the rear fascia.
- Illuminating icons in the outside rear view mirrors and optional chimes with turn signal (when driver selected).
- Notifying the driver of vehicles in the blind spots when changing lanes, passing vehicles, or if being passed.
- Notifying the driver of other vehicles crossing the rear path when the vehicle is in reverse and backing out of a parking space.
When the vehicle speed exceeds 9 km/h (6 mph) and the right or left BSM sensor detects an object within 48 km/h (30 mph) of vehicle speed in the monitored zone, the BSM sensors will request a blind spot icon illumination over Controller Area Network - Interior High Speed (CAN-IHS) bus to the appropriate mirror. A yellow LED triangle will then illuminate in the upper corner of the appropriate mirror. If the driver attempts to enter the zone, where the object has been detected with the turn signal activated, the sensor will send out two additional requests over the CAN-IHS bus if the "lights and chime" option has been selected in the driver assistance settings menu:
- The audio speakers will mute
- A chime will sound
RCP DETECTION SYSTEM
- Functions using the blind spot sensors as cross-path monitors.
- Is always included with the BSM system.
- Uses the LED icons on the outside mirrors to illuminate on the side of the vehicle that is approaching.
- Is activated when the shifter is in reverse.
The RCP detection system monitors the rear detection zones for vehicles that are moving toward the sides of the vehicle with a minimum speed of 3 km/h (2 mph). The chime is always used when the system senses objects in the rear cross path regardless of turn signal status.
The BSM sensors are each controlled by their on-board controller. The BSM is inclusive with the sensor. When the sensor recognizes that the appropriate conditions exist, the controller will energize the sensor to generate 25 Gigahertz radar pulses through the blind spot zone on that side of the vehicle. The sensor receives and filters the radar signals being returned from any objects detected within the zone, then transmits the appropriate data identifying the position and speed of identified objects. When either sensor determines that an object should be reported, the sensor sends electronic request messages over the CAN-IHS data bus to the BCM and the IPC to generate chime tones as an audible alert. The DDM or PDM then controls its respective left or right BSM display directly through a hard wired output. The sensor also sends electronic messages to the RRM to mute any current output through the sound system speakers.
Each of the two BSM sensors are independent and communicate on the CAN-IHS data bus. The sensor performs a bulb test by requesting illumination of the icon in its respective right or left blind spot display for a few seconds each time the status of the ignition transitions to ON. Each sensor continually monitors the BSM system and the sensor circuits and will store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for any fault that is detected.
