Module, Electronic Steering Lock (ESL): Description

Models manufactured for certain markets that require it, have an electromechanical device called an Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) module (2) incorporated in the Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) that locks and unlocks the steering column upon request by the Body Control Module (BCM). The ESL is located near the upper end of the steering column, below the steering column shroud and is secured to the steering column by two tamper resistant screws (1). The bi-directional electric motor that actuates the locking bolt is contained within the die cast metal housing of the ESL module.

The ESL transmits data and communicates with the other modules involved in the Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) on Controller Area Network - Chassis (CAN-C) data bus.

During normal operating conditions, the ESL module unlocks the steering column if the key fob in the vehicle is identified by the SKIS as a valid key.
