Module, Electronic Steering Lock (ESL): Removal
WARNING:
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
- Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to COLUMN, REMOVAL .
- Remove and discard the two tamper resistant screws (2) that secure the shaft lock module (3) to the steering column housing (1). One of three methods is suggested:
- Cut a straight slot in the top of each screw to enable removal with a screw driver.
- Use a drift punch and a hammer to rotate each screw counterclockwise far enough to grasp and complete removal using locking pliers.
- Use an appropriate drill bit to bore a hole in the center of each screw, then use an appropriate screw extractor to complete screw removal.
- Remove the shaft lock module from the steering column.
