Before attempting any repair on an automatic transmission, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) with the appropriate scan tool.
CAUTION:
A unique transmission fluid has been developed for this transmission. This fluid is NOT compatible with ATF+4 or any other current FCA US LLC transmission fluid. For specifics about this unique fluid see FLUIDS, LUBRICANTS AND GENUINE PARTS.
NOTE:
ZF transmissions are filled from the factory with UV leak detection dye. Do NOT add leak detection dye to the transmission. Adding oil dye can cause shift quality issues and is not recommended.
Transmission malfunctions may be caused by the following general conditions:
- Poor engine performance.
- Hydraulic malfunctions.
- Mechanical malfunctions.
- Electronic malfunctions.
- Transfer case performance (if equipped).
Diagnosis of these problems should always begin by checking the following easily accessible variables:
- Transmission fluid level
- Transmission fluid condition
- Transmission DTCs using an appropriate scan tool
- Perform a thorough road test to determine if the problem has been corrected or if more diagnosis is necessary
