Description And Operation
DESCRIPTION
The MP3022 is a two-speed, on-demand, active four-wheel drive transfer case that provides optimum traction for a wide range of conditions, while maximizing driver convenience. When operating in 4HI Auto mode, this sophisticated system anticipates and prevents slip by redirecting torque as necessary, up to 50% to the front and rear axle if needed.
For added traction capability when traversing steep grades, rough terrain or extremely poor traction surfaces, the transfer case includes a 4LO mode. This second speed gear multiplies engine torque 2.72 times (4:1 in Rock-Trac® equipped vehicles) and locks the clutch pack for maximum traction.
The MP3022C transfer case provides the following benefits:
- Active, on-demand four-wheel drive requires no driver input
- Instantly anticipates slip and preemptively redirects torque as needed
- Vehicle stability under all conditions because torque is constantly being transferred
- 4LO operation mode provides an advantage over vehicles equipped with a single-speed all-wheel drive transfer case.
- Enhanced traction and stability provided by the Traction Control and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) working in tandem with four-wheel-drive
- A robust design and sealing for reliability
- Maintenance-free
- A neutral mode permits flat towing
OPERATING RANGES
The MP3022 provides the following ranges:
2HI - 4HI Auto - 4HI Part Time - Neutral - 4LO
- 2HI:
- Front axle spins freely
- Power sent to rear wheel
- A synchronizer inside the transfer case makes for smoother shifts between 2HI - 4HI and for the Front Axle Disconnect (FAD) feature.
- 4HI AUTO:
- Shift-on-the-Fly at speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph)
- Front and rear drive shafts are connected through a clutch pack design
- The system anticipates slip and reacts accordingly
- This mode can be used on any road surface including dry pavement, unlike a 4WD Lock or Part-Time system.
- 4HI Part Time:
- This mode is not for use on dry pavement
- Front and rear drive shafts are connected through a clutch pack design
- The driveline torque is still flowing through the transfer case clutch pack in this mode. However, the clutch is biased towards full compression, and behaves as if it were a part-time transfer case.
- NEUTRAL:
- Use for towing the vehicle behind another vehicle
- The vehicle may roll while the transfer case is in neutral, even with the transmission in park.
- Does not require uncoupling drive shafts
- 4LO:
- Use for severe off-road situations. This mode is not for use on dry pavement
- Increases available engine torque by 2.72:1 (4:1 in Rock-Trac® equipped vehicles)
- The driveline torque is still flowing through the transfer case clutch pack in this mode. However, as in 4HI part-time mode, the clutch is biased towards full compression, and behaves as if it were a part-time transfer case.
OPERATION
Selecting 4HI Auto, via the floor-mounted select lever, this sophisticated system anticipates and prevents slip by redirecting torque as necessary, up to 50% to the front and rear axle if needed
The MP3022C transfer case is a full-time four-wheel drive system - 2HI is the usual driving mode, with the front axle spinning freely and a power directed only to the rear wheels. This is the most fuel-efficient mode. It can however, also drive in 4HI Auto for normal driving. This mode will provide some torque to the front wheels at all times, and preemptively transmit more torque as needed. This is less efficient than 2HI because the full driveline and both axles are in use.
A Neutral mode permits towing without having to disconnect the drive shafts.
For severe off-road situations, shifting from 4HI to 4LO is best engaged by slowing speed to 3-5 km/h (2-3 mph), put transmission in Neutral, engage 4LO and return transmission to desired gear. The front and rear drive shafts are locked together, and a planetary gear set multiplies torque by 2.72:1 (4:1 in Rock-Trac® equipped vehicles), providing an extremely low gear ratio.
