Removal And Installation: AWD: Removal

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.

  2. Remove and DISCARD  the steering shaft to steering gear pinch fastener (1).

    Do not start to remove (or break free) the pinch fastener with an impact wrench/gun. 

  3. Remove the dash seal to dash panel fasteners (2).
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  6. Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, ENGINE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  7. Remove the drive shaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  8. Remove the exhaust hanger (1).
  9. Remove the exhaust pipe clamp (2) and disengage the exhaust pipe.
  10. Remove the tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to TIE ROD, STEERING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  11. Remove the steering gear crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, STEERING GEAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
    NOTE:

    DO NOT  disconnect the torque sensor (grey) harness connector and make sure it is connected properly.

  12. Remove the heat shield to steering gear mounting fasteners (1, 2) and remove the heat shields.

  13. Support the transmission (2) with a suitable stand (1).

  14. Support the steering gear with a suitable strap and remove the steering gear bolts (1).
  15. Remove the steering gear crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, STEERING GEAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  16. Disconnect the Electric Power Steering (EPS) wire harness connectors (1, 2).
  17. Remove both stabilizer bar links and use a suitable strap to tie down the stabilizer bar to the control arm. Refer to LINK, STABILIZER BAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  18. Remove the bracket fasteners (1) and remove the bracket.

  19. Remove the dash seal to steering gear fasteners (1), and remove the dash seal.
  20. Remove the steering gear.
  21. Remove the heat shield.
